In this our 170th issue we take a look at how AI is being embraced by artists, entrepreneurs and educators in Macau.

Recently, OpenAI launched GPT-4o, significantly boosting the capabilities of its most famous product ChatGPT.  Artificial Intelligence (AI) – essentially self-learning computer software – was once a thing of science fiction, but today it is very much a part of our every day lives. We all use it in some way, often without even knowing.  This technology is powerful stuff and it’s already changing the world, but exactly how it will affect our future, nobody can truly predict.  In this issue we speak to people in Macau – in business, education and the arts – who are embracing AI, to find out how they are using it and what they think the future might look in an AI-driven Macau.

Recently, Macau CLOSER ran the fourth edition of our annual photography competition, based around the theme of famous Portuguese poet Luis Camoes, rumoured to have spent time here in the city during his adventurous life.  This year is the 500th anniversary of his death and we asked local photographers to capture a sense of his presence in the city today.  Check out the winning photos in these pages.

Speaking of local photographic talent, we chat with Rusty Fox about his latest solo exhibition Nocturnal and the publication of an accompanying photobook.

If you’re looking for a fun place to take selfies, head on over to Galaxy to experience their new playful Eggspression exhibition, by Dutch artist Henk Hofstra and New York based art collective Egg House.

It might be the summer holidays, but there’s plenty happening in the world of F&B these days.  First we try some amazing Japanese cuisine at the new Teppanyaki Shou at Raffles Macau, and then we catch up with an old friend, Chef Justin Paul at his new Indian restaurant Justindia.  And we speak to businessman Simon Chan who recently rescued and reopened one of the oldest eating establishments in the city, A Vencedora.

Over at the bar we enjoy some innovative cocktails from Macau’s own mixology master Samio Choi, who is head bartender at W Hotel Macau’s two bars Blind Tiger and Living Room.

And we celebrate the announcement that the St. Regis Bar Macau has been included at position No.22 on the prestigious Asia’s 50 Best Bars list for 2024.

If you’re spending a lot of time at the pool or beach these days, Rui Carreiro has some expert hair care tips for you.  And we are even offering a free sample of shampoo and conditioner from Italian brand Davines Haircare.

Finally, we visit the lovely home of Cape Verdean couple Jocelina and Fabio Monteiro who are enjoying calling Macau home.

Keep enjoying your summer holidays!  Happy Reading!
