Jointly with MadeIn Gallery from Shanghai, Humarish Club is pleased to present "Untitled (Artist)", the first solo exhibition of Chinese contemporary artist Lu Pingyuan in Macau starting from 17th March, 2023. The exhibition features important series of paintings, drawings and sculptures emerged from the artist’s recent exhibitions and research. Lu creates “story” characters derived from his inspirations that subtly respond to personal narratives interweaved with art history, opening up a unique and conceptual window of surrealism that leads us to reflect on the history of art and the origin of experience. Esteemed guests to attend the inauguration include Ms. Susanna Un Sio San, Director of the Macao Museum of Art of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR, Ms. Chui Ka Weng, Guangxi Associations General Federation of Macau, Ms. Christine Hong, Vice President of Retail Business Development of Lisboeta Macau, Mr. Sun Qidong, Curator of "Untitled (Artist) " exhibition, Mr. Lu Pingyuan, Exhibition Artist, together with Mr. Hua Yuzhou, Founder and Art Director of Humarish Club.

Lu Pingyuan's practice starts with a series of fantasy stories paralleled with art and real life. Coding multiple cultural genes through imagination, he calls out phantoms that shuttle between the opposing worlds of ancient-modern, imaginary-real, artificial-natural, material-spiritual, and process-outcome. He applies a fluid medium to integrate storytelling, painting, sculpture, video, installation, music, and the action of artmaking into an entirety. This phantomlike approach creates a seemingly naive yet profound 'otherness' that broadens the boundaries of inherent knowledge systems, image production and behavioral patterns transcending the framework of dichotomy.

In "Untitled (Artist)", Lu extends his flexible appropriation of art history symbols and pop culture classics, deconstructing the myth of the artist's talent with multi-layered imageries. Look! I’m Picasso! collages the facial features of Mr. Potato from Toy Story on top of Cubist portraits. The unconventional coupling of popular and elite culture triggers new dynamics that embody the artist’s ambition throughout different stages of his career. The shapeshifting Barbabeau travels through diversified painting scenes in the Nature Noir series, referring to the artist's subjectivity and the uncertainty in his artmaking process. Lingua Playful translates Lu’s inspiration from film and everyday life into floating blue elves, inviting the viewer to touch the uncharted territory of language communication from an iconographic perspective. The artist's methodology also resides in the biscuit relief of The Witch's Diary, while Lu transforms himself into the wizard who "bakes" the sculptures. The imagination about "artmaking as ensouling, artmaking as adventure" is thereby fermented and solidified within a seemingly crisp scene.

As the greatest practitioner and questioner of his art, Lu’s instantaneous and versatile artistic language deviates from the barrier of modernism. He captures transcendental memes through tales, guiding people who have faith in storytelling to confront the stagnant pool of mental exhaustion with surrealism, and find the eternity of art via a novel way of examining our existence.
