Macao’s renowned calligrapher Ambrose So Shu Fai has been invited by The Macao Foundation’s Macao Artists Promotion Project to exhibit more than 40 pieces of his calligraphic works at the exhibition gallery of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (“IACM”). The exhibits include works written in oracle bone script, seal script, clerical script and running script, as well as inscriptions on bamboo and wooden slips.

The exhibition “Calligraphy by Ambrose So Shu Fai – Reflections of Macao” was officiated on 1 June 2018 at the exhibition gallery of IACM by Wan Sucheng, Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Wang Dong, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, Vítor Sereno, Consul General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong, Wu Zhiliang, President of the Board of Directors of The Macao Foundation, Mok Ian Ian, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, and the calligrapher Ambrose So Shu Fai.  The book Reflections of Macao – Collection of calligraphy by Ambrose So Shu Fai was also launched at the opening ceremony.

Ambrose So said in his speech, “I am privileged to hold my exhibition ‘Reflections of Macao’ at the invitation of The Macao Foundation’s Macao Artists Promotion Project at the IACM exhibition gallery. Once an important place for China’s foreign trade and cultural exchange on the Maritime Silk Road, Macao is a city enriched with both the cultures of East and West. The influences of the Chinese and Portuguese cultures over the past four centuries have contributed to the unique Sino-Luso culture of Macao. I have collected poems on Macao, covering its architecture, culture, beliefs and customs, which were composed during the Ming and Qing dynasties, to reflect the transformation of the city, aiming to foster deeper understanding of Macao’s unique bridging role in the history of cultural exchange between East and West, and its provision of a platform between China and Europe in the One Belt One Road Initiative. I have also rewritten some of my previously exhibited works for this exhibition – contents are the same, yet the feeling is fresh, as they remind me why I started – a reflection of my calligraphy journey over four decades of work in Macao.”

Ambrose So is a renowned businessman and a devoted artist in Chinese calligraphy.  Founder and Chairman of the Jiazi Society of Calligraphy since 1985, he has held various solo exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan as well as in Lisbon and Aveiro, Portugal.  His works with the theme of “Macau: A Cultural Janus” were featured in the exhibition of “Portugal meets China” inaugurated by the President of Portugal Dr. Jorge Sampaio and the Minister of Culture of the People’s Republic of China Mr. Sun Jiazheng in Beijing, 2005.  His calligraphy was also featured on a set of Macao stamps “Macao Art – Chinese Calligraphy” issued in 2000.  He proposed the Pan Pearl River Delta calligraphy exhibition in 2004 with the first of its series opening in Guangzhou in 2005.
