THIS IS MY CITY FESTIVAL UNVEILS

Beijing's internationally famous band Re-TROS and the Afro Baile evenings by Celeste Mariposa are the highlights of this year's line-up of This is My City - Global Creative Network (TIMC).

Beijing's internationally famous band Re-TROS and the Afro Baile evenings by Celeste Mariposa are the highlights of this year's line-up of This is My City – Global Creative Network (TIMC). Last year, the Macau-based cultural festival expanded into the Pearl Delta Region, but in 2018 TIMC is stretching its borders even further, doing a Tour Fest that starts in Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Macau, from November 22 to 25, and finishes in São Paulo, Brazil, between December 5 to 9.

The first big name to feature on TIMC 2018 line-up is Re-TROS (Rebuilding the Rights of Statues), a Chinese Post-Punk band that is considered the most internationally influential rock band in Mainland China. Re-TROS has toured the world playing festivals in Europe and the USA, supporting bands like Depeche Mode and The XX, as well Gang of Four and PiL (John Lydon of Sex Pistols).

Influenced by the underground sound of Joy Division and Bauhaus, Re-TROS has evolved since its debut EP 'Cut off!' (which featured Brian Eno in keyboards) back in 2005 into one of the most unique bands of China's indie scene and will now be playing for the first time in Macau, on November 25, at the Navy Yard 2. Its latest album, ‘Before the Applause’ (2017), was produced by Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Bjork) in Beijing and promoted in Europe and America simultaneously.

Another of TIMC 2018 highlights is Celeste Mariposa, a Lisbon-based project (label, promoter and DJ), founded in 2009 by Francisco Sousa and Wilson Vilares, dedicated to spreading the word and promoting Lusophone African music (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and San Tome and Principe) around the world.

The Celeste Mariposa project will organise its famous Afro Baile sessions at The Oil Bar, in Shenzhen, on November 23, and, in Macau, at D2 Club, on November 24, and at the Live Music Association space, on November 25, featuring a complete Lusophone African music collection including historical albums as well as many ultra-rare author editions.

But TIMC's evenings will also feature another big name of Lisbon's dance scene. João Vieira, the mastermind behind two of Portugal's biggest independent bands, X-Wife and White Haus, under his alias DJ Kitten, will play at The Oil Bar, in Shenzhen, on November 23, as well as in Macau, at D2 Club, on November 24, and at the Live Music Association space, on November 25.

Another musical moment to happen at TIMC will be the concert by Forget the G, on November 24, at the Navy Yard 2. Forget the G is a Macau Indie music band that combines post rock and experimental music, adding multimedia elements to their live performances.

TIMC as a showcase for the music industry

This year's edition of TIMC also aims at introducing Chinese and Lusophone artists and projects, holding talks and networking events, with the specific focus of linking the Asian, European, African and South American music markets together.

That's why TIMC opens on November 22 with a talk under the topic “Global Creative Network” at the Navy Yard 2, 6 pm, featuring promoters, organisers and sponsors, whose names are yet to be revealed, and promising to shed a light on the possibilities of creating a network of local, regional and international artists, that has Macau as its base.

Other highlights of TIMC 2018 are the conferences “Live Houses and the City”, on November 24, at 4 pm, and “Festivals and the City”, on November 25, at 3 pm, at the Navy Yard 2, featuring local, Chinese and Portuguese names of the music industry. Among the speakers are João Vaz from the Portuguese label Pataca Discos, Márcio Laranjeira from the Portuguese music promoter Lovers & Lollypops, responsible for organising Tremor Festival in Azores, Portugal, and Luís Viegas, from the music agency Até ao Fim do Mundo.

TIMC and SIM São Paulo

This year, TIMC will also participate at SIM São Paulo 2018, which will take place between December 5 to 9, in Brazil. Representatives from TIMC will not only feature in the conference “Festivals and the city”, but they will also bring the Chinese rock band Wu Tiao Ren to participate in one of SIM's musical evenings.

Wu Tiao Ren is a Guangzhou-based band that by using a folk-punk aesthetic expands the Chinese tradition with psychedelic echoes. Maotao (vocals and guitar), Renke (vocals, guitar and accordion), He Junni (bass) and Changjiang (drums) have received awards such as the Chinese Music Media Awards and the Taiwan Golden Indie Music Awards.

SIM São Paulo is one of the most important music conventions in Latin America. During five days, the capital city of Brazil becomes a meeting point for professionals of all sectors of the music industry.

About TIMC

TIMC was born on 2006 under the umbrella of the cultural association +853.

At the end of its 10 years' existence cycle, TIMC reshaped itself and gave its first steps to integrate the Pearl River Delta in a creative network, promoting the Portuguese-speaking culture in the region.

In 2018, TIMC is moving even further, taking Chinese music to the Portuguese-speaking world, in São Paulo, Brazil.

This will be TIMC's biggest line-up ever since its debut in 2006 and all events are free of charge.
