On January 19, the Live Music Association (LMA) will host an almost indescribable show that unites experimental music and visual arts. "It's an auditory experience," says Eric Chan of Day's Eyes Records. The LLLSD quartet (Lab for Life-Long Sound Dysfunctions) comes from Sweden and they have included Macau on their Asian tour.
Band members are Lars Åkerlund, Lise-Lotte Norelius, Sten Backman and Daniel Rozenhall and together they form LLLSD. They are bringing their show "Noise On Site 8" to Macau’s LMA. The four artists work in different "constellations", and thus create an art that is on the border of the musical and the visual, the rehearsed and the improvised, as described in the note that promotes the performance.
"On that night we're going to mix experimental music with fine arts," Eric Chan, founder of publisher Day's Eyes Records, who is organizing the show, explains. "They are a quartet of electronic and experimental music, each with their own instrument, and they will add fine arts, in a general sense. It’s a performance that defies categorization. There will be electronic music, noise, drum, everything related to the most 'artsy' or 'noisy' part. It's very difficult to explain," the organizer says, tring his best to define the experience.
What is certain, for now, is that this Swedish quartet will use electronic instruments, computers and synthesizers, for example, for the experimental music.
"I think they're going to do visual arts as well. They have been touring with a show that integrates other visual arts, but I don’t know if they will bring this component to Macau," says Eric Chan, who ends up trying another description: "I would say this show is an experience. It is very difficult to describe the show in a way that makes sense to everyone. It's more or less a listening experience. They play with the frequencies and the texture of the sound."
LLLSD have been touring throughout Asia. "Before Macau they will go to Thailand and then to Taiwan for three shows, then to China as well. It's a great tour," says the publisher's founder, adding:"It's great that they have included Macau on the tour, because there are often no such shows in Macau. Macau is not a place where these types of artists stop."
On the public's reaction, Eric Chan says it's going to be "complicated". "Because it's experimental music, I don’t think locals are familiar with it. But sometimes we organize shows and see that they like to explore the type of music, but sometimes they don’t even go to the shows because they’re not familiar with it. I'm not expecting a big crowd, but I'm expecting to see new faces," he says.
Eric Chan also shares that one of the members of the Swedish group, Lars Åkerlund, has previously performed in Macau in a solo show. "At the time we met him, he liked Macau and wanted to return with the group," he shares.
