Dominic Choi was brought up in an architecture family with four generations of engineers and architects. He graduated from University College of London (UCL) with two master degrees in Architecture Design and Urban Design.
Dominic has “two lovely daughters and an amazing wife”, and is a managing director of architectural practice ‘Meta Architecture Design Office Ltd – MAO’, which he established together with his wife, Carmen. He has worked professionally in various countries, including the UK, Portugal, China, Japan and Macau and has designed or been involved in more than 200 projects. He has also worked as a visiting professor for the final year students in architecture at The University of St. Joseph.
In 2014, Dominic, together with his wife and a few other architects, founded ‘Architecture Sans Frontieres – Macau (Architecture without Borders -‘ASF-Macau’) the first architectural NGO in Macau, which focuses on humanitarian projects worldwide and locally, to help disadvantaged communities and recovery from natural disaster. ASF-Macau has worked with various local schools and organizations to raise funds and awareness, and has completed several projects in the Philippines, a few local projects in Macau and has two on-going projects in Nepal. ASF-Macau is also a member of the world wide NGO group ‘Architecture Sans Frontieres – International (ASF-Int)’ which has 33 member organizations worldwide.
– What’s your idea of a perfect day?
Having nothing to worry at the end of day, and being ready for the new challenges the next morning.
– If you could go back in time to any event in history, what would it be?
I would like to go back to the day when my second child was born.
– What’s your favorite book?
The Bible, because I can never get bored with it.
– And your favorite singer/ band?
I like classical music since I do not get distracted by the lyrics.
– Who is your hero?
My mum.
– What can always cheer you up when you are having a bad day?
Being with my family or praying.
– What’s your worst habit?
I am very forgetful, but sometimes this can be a good habit too, since I also forget bad things.
– If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
All sorts of Malaysian Food, but particularly one dish, Nasi Lemak.
– If you could retire tomorrow what would you do?
Be with my two little daughters and my lovely wife at all times.
– What’s your favourite season or festival?
Christmas, as it reminds me of the purpose in life.
– What’s your favourite place in Macau?
In my car, I can drive to anywhere I like at any time.
