Vegetarian in Macau

Well, I have few comments on this.

First of all, I am not 100 percent vegan and none of us have to be. I love my scrambled eggs (organic and free-range) and fresh, beautifully grilled, wild-caught fish (preferably paired with a glass of chilled white, organic if possible! )
So how do I dare to promote a vegan and vegetarian diet, if I don’t “walk the talk” myself? Because no matter the diet, lifestyle or exercise routine – we all benefit greatly from eating more fruits, vegetables and other plant foods. And it is difficult to argue with that.

So what is the difference between vegan and vegetarian?

A vegan diet excludes any kind of animal products – whether it is meat, seafood, milk or cheese. Very often it can spread to the lifestyle as well – no leather shoes or bags, no woollen blankets, silk underwear or animal-tested cosmetics.

A vegetarian diet, on the other hand, may include dairy products and eggs, however it is still very strict when it comes to meat-related products, even gelatin pill capsules.

To avoid confusion and criticizing looks directed at you while you enjoy a vanilla ice-cream, I avoid any veg-labeling of people; however I invite you to include and enjoy more plant foods on your daily plate.

Eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other plant foods may reduce risk of heart disease, protect against certain types of cancers, obesity, and type-2 diabetes. Fruits and vegetables are rich in dietary fiber and naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories. Besides, they are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants!  Aren’t they the ideal food?  Oh wait, what about protein and calcium?

Have you ever met a person suffering from protein deficiency? Although protein is certainly an essential nutrient which plays many key roles in the way our bodies function, we do not need huge quantities of it. Nuts, seeds, and “ancient grains” like quinoa and amaranth are high in protein; even broccoli and kale are dignified competitors to chicken breast and sirloin steak. And if you’re  wondering about calcium – give a chance to dark green leafy vegetables or sesame seeds, which we have more than plenty of in Macau.
