Time to nail it down

Although we seldom think about it it, each set of nails is unique in itself, as different from all others as the people they belong to. Funnily enough, they grow faster in men, faster during Summer and also grow faster if you cut them regularly. Like people, they are also affected by internal and external factors such as nutrition, medication, trauma, stress and natural aging.

The condition of our nails reflects our general state of health; they mirror the whole body in such a way that a well-trained dermatologist can pinpoint particular diseases just from examining your nails.

Any sudden changes in color, shape or thickness may be a red light for a latent health problem, such as liver or kidney disease, anemia or even diabetes, and it could be a silent call for you to check with your healthcare provider.

Issues with the nails themselves may vary from the very common (and yet utterly irritating!) fungal infections, to more serious conditions like melanomas. Although this is very rare, seek medical attention if you see a dark colored streak within the nail plate.

In order to keep your nails healthy and strong, here are some tips that you can easily follow:

• Always keep your nails clean and refrain from biting them; this will prevent infections and damage to the the skin surrounding your fingers.

• Always cut your nails straight across and file them slightly rounded in the center with an emery board. If your nails are thick and difficult to cut, soak them in warm salt water and use a lactic acid or urea cream to soften them before cutting.

• For your toes, it is very important to wear proper-fitting shoes and change shoes every now and then. Shoes that are too tight may cause ingrown toenails.

• After removing nail polish, it is a good idea to apply moisturizer to your nails, since most nail polish removers contain chemicals that will dry your nails.

• Make sure your nail salon follows strict sanitation guidelines and that the technicians wash their hands between clients.

• Beware of artificial nails, as over time, they may damage your natural nails. Avoid them if you are prone to fungal infections or if you have brittle nails.

• Always (and I mean always!) wear flip flops at the pool or public showers.

It’s not easy being a woman. We can have all kinds of bad days, but never, ever bad nails, for as someone once said “a girl without beautiful nails is like a night without stars”.
