The Power of Water

The term lympathic system comes from the Latin word “lymphaticus”, which means “connected to water”. It is the designation for a network of vessels that are a significant and essential part of our immune system. Considering that the lymphatic vessels carry substances vital to the defence of our bodies and are channels for the removal of waste products, its effective functioning is critical for overall well being.

One way to improve the efficiency of your lymphatic system is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), a set of movements developed by Dr. Emil Vodder in the early 1930s, with the objective of relieving the symptoms of congested sinus and catarrh. Today, MLD is a worldwide and medically accepted treatment for a wide variety of illnesses. By using a gentle pressure technique, MLD is a preventative and remedial treatment that pushes the toxins in the direction of the lymph flow to stimulate and hasten the detoxing of the body, promoting a strong immune system.

The benefits of this therapy are various. Besides being a relaxing treatment and thus suitable for stress reduction, it also reduces fluid congestion from swollen legs, ankles and puffy eyes, improves the appearance of old scars and may reduce stretch marks, is widely used to speed up healing after cosmetic surgery and is a pathway for the treatment and control of lymphoedema (localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system).

Nevertheless, a set of healthy habits is the secret to keeping your lymphatic system in its best condition. So, what can be done to improve it?

1. Remember to breathe deeply every now and then. Our lymphatic system does not have a pumping mechanism and therefore relies on the action of deep breathing to relay toxins into the blood flow before they are detoxified by the liver.

2. Exercise often to ensure the lymph system flows properly.

3. Drink plenty of water. Water helps the lymph fluid to flow properly through the body.

4. Eat raw fruit on an empty stomach. The enzymes and acids in the fruit are powerful lymph cleansers. Eat plenty of green vegetables to get adequate chlorophyll to help purify your blood and lymph fluid.

5. Try to dry skin brush before showering. Brush your skin in circular motions from the toes and fingers to the chest to stimulate the lymphatic flow. Always brush in the same direction that your lymph system flows — towards the heart.
