Know Yourself

In the August Issue, I listed 5 steps for finding your perfect style. Still remember them? Here is a recap:

Step 1 – Always maintain a healthy body and be happy about it.

Step 2 – Know yourself.

Step 3 – Remember the rules.

Step 4 – Pick the right items.

Step 5 – Elevate your taste.

Last time, I talked about Step 1 so let’s continue with the details of Step 2.

First of all, you need to know all your basic body measurements. I’m not just talking about the size S/M/L. You should at least know your shoulder width, bust, waist, and hip sizes. Moreover, you should measure the distance from your waist to ankle, and your thigh and calf sizes.

Next you need to understand what your “horizontal body type” is. This is all about proportion and even if you are not the typical “hour glass” type, you can improve it visually by choosing your outfits wisely.

For example, I am more of a “pear” type, so I tend to choose my tops in lighter colours and darker bottoms, as light colours have a swelling visual effect. Also, I always wear tight jeans instead of “boyfriend” jeans, and tight pencil midi-skirts instead of short A-line skirts.

Choose something that makes your bigger parts look smaller and neat. If you are an “inverted triangle”, avoid tops with too much decoration like a ruffle top, and wear more wide leg trousers and full skirts. The rule of thumb is to balance your proportions.

Now you need to know your “vertical body type”.  This is all about the ratio of your leg to your torso. There are three types: long legs/short torso; short legs/long torso; and balanced.

Asians usually fall into the second and third categories. The key is to raise your waistline by wearing short tops with a high-waist bottom. Choose wide belts when possible because narrow belts will make your waist look even longer! Wear same colour tone pants with heels, which will  lengthen your legs visually.

As for the long leg category, you are the blessed ones, so don’t ever complain about it!
