Have a Seat

Have a seat guys. Take some time off, get a coffee and relax. Most of us are too busy these days to really find a few minutes to just take a deep breath and sit patiently waiting for whatever comes to brighten up our day, so this month’s topic is chairs. But not just any chair, the Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair by Herman Miller. Did I get your attention? Good!

The Eames Molded Fiberglas Chair was originally produced in 1950, but due to its less environmentally friendly manufacturing methods, production had ceased until recently. Now however, a new proprietary process of producing fiberglass, with a less volatile, monomer-free “dry bind” process has been employed, in order to resurrect this beautifully and graciously designed chair in to the contemporary world. Just as with the original chairs, the new fibreglass finish has the same covetable surface variation and tell-tale fiberglass striation that has attracted and impressed a lot of vintage collectors for decades.

The re-appearance of such a clever chair has brought great applause from designer chair lovers everywhere. The chairs clearly show the passion Charles and Ray Eames have for design, and also reflect the funky and intriguing sides of both designers. To them, it wasn’t enough to have a brilliant “wow” idea. It was equally important to have a thoughtful and caring heart behind it to fulfil every need as much as possible, with pinches of playfulness and quirkiness. No wonder their design fits every environment, whether in the 1950s or now.

These chairs are available in both the arm and side chair formats in eight archival colours. They can be configured with a choice of wire, dowel leg, stacking, rocker, and four-leg bases. An array of trims – finely tailored Hopsak fabrics designed by Alexander Girard, Herman Miller’s Textile Director from 1952 to 1973 – round out the collection of shell customization options, fully restoring the integrity of the original 1953 shell chair offerings. All chairs can be recycled through the Herman Miller Take Back Program.

So, still in a hurry to go somewhere? Come on, have a seat and picture how these chic yet powerfully designed chairs can brighten up your home, office, garden, or anywhere you can picture chilling out.
