Get Juiced

Juicing has arrived in Macau, as usual with a bit of a delay, but the trend is here and it is going to grow.

Fresh juice has been a part of my daily life ever since I learned that “detox” is not about starving yourself, but about feeling the best you can every day.

Juicing has gained popularity for its ability to energize, alkalize, detox and rejuvenate both inside and out. Fresh, cold-pressed juices fill you with beneficial nutrients and antioxidants. Juicing has shown an ability to improve skin health, reverse degenerative diseases and even slow down or reverse grey hair! And even more powerful, raw green vegetable juice might be the greatest cleanser available to us – pure, alkaline and rich in chlorophyll.

I am a big fan of green juicing, but there is a right and wrong way to juice, so if you are interested in juicing, you need to know some things.

Go easy on fruit juices – be especially cautious with tropical sweet fruits, which are very high in sugar. Fruits offer plenty of antioxidants and beneficial enzymes, but they are best eaten whole with their fiber. A good trick is to mix fruits with vegetables for your fresh juice.

Focus on raw green vegetables for maximum nutrition and cleansing – this is a great way to sneak more vegetables into your diet. Juices, though, should not be a substitute for real whole vegetables.

Drink raw, cold-pressed juices fresh. Packages and canned juices are pasteurized, and might contain preservatives or sweeteners.  We want the real thing: fresh, raw and cold-pressed for higher nutritional value and better taste.

The best veggies to juice include the following:

• Cucumbers – very cleansing and good for skin health

• Celery – anti-inflammatory and alkalizing; also said to lower blood pressure

• Beets – a super liver cleanser and great vegetarian source of iron

• Carrots – rich in beta-carotene, beneficial for eyesight, and also a great liver/gall bladder cleanser

• Spinach and other dark leafy green vegetables – high in iron, very alkalizing, and great for skin health

• Wheatgrass – overall great detoxifier and also alkalizing

• Herbs and “strong” foods like ginger, turmeric, lemons and garlic – cleansing and powerful

You might want to join the juicing revolution yourself to experience many health benefits (not to mention the quick weight loss). It is a step forward by going back to our origins – eating more fruits and vegetables, being well and living happier and healthier lives.

Katya has just opened her own juicery in Macau – GREENS Kitchen & Juicery, so check it out for some healthy drinks:
