Fit For All

Three cheers for the Macau government!  Or specifically, IACM, the Civil and Municipal Affairs Bureau.  What a magnificent park, running and cycle track facility that has been built along the waterfront in front of Ocean Gardens, stretching almost, and soon, I understand, to be continued all the way to Galaxy.

Opened a little under a year ago, the pleasure I see people gain from this park is immeasurable. Rain or shine folks are out there, all ages enjoying the open space and tree-lined walks. Elderly couples arm in arm having an early morning stroll; little children screeching with delight as they play with friends on the playing frames; proud parents encouraging youngsters with their first attempts at cycling; teenagers on bikes, tiny tots on tricycles; super fit joggers and power walkers like my friends and I who, at the end of each day, briskly walk the three miles one end to the other and back, and marvel at the sensational orange sunsets over Hengqin island.

Even the dogs have it good, with a spacious enclosed dog park – giving dogs their own separate run around space is a joy as one doesn’t feel the need to hopscotch around pee and possible poo on the grass verges.

So many thoughtful details: Water fountains for washing hands, machines dispensing cold drinks, shaded areas for relaxing and playing mahjong,  spotless public loos, bikes of all sizes for rent at MOP10 an hour, and several fishing piers for recreational angling.

With the breezy sea air, and the classic Asian waterside scene of boats slowly chugging by with families of white egrets fishing for supper, I can’t help but think what a very sensible gift this park is to the Macau people.  Our tax dollars well spent I’d say.
