A balanced mind and body

I remember a couple of years ago, yoga was everywhere in Macau – new yoga studios were popping up around the city, physical flexibility and yoga positions would be dinner party conversation topics, and some of my friends even travelled abroad to do yoga teaching training.

Now, since the initial yoga excitement seems to have faded away, we can take a deep breath and look at it more closely: what is yoga, why should you give it a try and why is it still popular in Macau?

Originating in India, yoga is the physical, mental, and spiritual practices undertaken to achieve a state of permanent peace of mind in order to experience one’s true self.

If you are new to yoga or don’t care to go deep into its true origins, you can simply look at it as a great way to support your body’s strength and flexibility and to develop a balanced mind.

Real yogis would probably tell that it is a very unclear definition, but for us busy office workers, moms and entrepreneurs, yoga can be the answer to the everlasting question of “What should I do to feel better, have more energy, be fit and look good?”

There are different styles of yoga. Some of them require longer duration classes, while others focus more on breathing techniques or simply stretching.

From the most popular yoga styles offered in Macau, I suggest looking at Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Meditation.

Hatha is a rather general style, usually relatively easier, and perfect for those who are unsure about which class to take and just want an introduction to yoga within their ‘comfort-zone’.

Ashtanga is more of an athletic style that combines fast-paced movement with breathing work. This style is perfect if you want more intense practice with more visible results.

Vinyasa symbolizes a flowing, dynamic form of yoga, where postures are linked together using breathing – ideal for those wanting a yoga-style workout.

Meditation, surprisingly, is the most challenging of all. Meditation practice is all about being present and merging your mind, body and senses. It is a process that can foster self-acceptance, exploration, awareness, mind/body balance and compassion. Meditation is perfect for … everybody.

Focusing so much on our wellbeing, it’s no wonder yoga is still very popular in Macau. Give it a try and you might fall in love with yoga as well!
