Recently, in advance of the launch of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2018, Michelin unveiled the list of establishments that have received a Bib Gourmand recognition.
This year’s selection includes nine establishments in Macau, all offering a quality set three-course menu for a maximum of HK$400.
And one of the local restaurants included is O Castiço, located in Taipa Village and owned by José Ferreira.
It was “a wonderful feeling”, says José, calling the recognition by the best-known gastronomic guide in the world “an experience I never expected to have.”
In receiving the recognition, Ferreira highlights the fundamental role of the whole team, with particular emphasis on cook Aleen.
The recognition of O Castiço is justified, in his opinion, “by the good food” that the restaurant offers, despite sometimes experiencing some difficulties with the local economy.
“I always try to have attractive and welcoming prices for the customers. We know that in Macau everything is very expensive, especially the rents, and I try to keep the prices affordable for everyone. There are certain things that I barely make a profit on,” he laments.
Regarding the dishes – hard as it is to choose just one – Ferreira says that Bife à Castiço is very popular, especially among tourists, and personally he enjoys the feijoada.
The cook at O Castiço, Aleen, also acknowledges the continued support of customers and friends who frequently visit the restaurant: “I’m grateful for all that José’s father [Luis Ferreira] taught me, it is what I’ve done so far, and if possible, tried to improve. It wasn’t difficult to learn because it is my passion,” she smiles.
With the success of the Taipa venue, José also reveals that he is considering opening a second location on Macau Peninsula.
“At the beginning of next year I’m thinking about finding a cozy, friendly space with a low rent, which is going to be the most complicated part. It would be on the Macau side, while still maintaining the Taipa space,” says José.
If his plans go ahead, the new restaurant will definitely follow the same formula as the one in Taipa, in terms of food and prices, José guarantees.
