A Night of Fado

The XXIX Macau Arts Festival (FAM) will present a Fado concert featuring singers Mísia and Pedro Moutinho, accompanied by the Chinese Orchestra of Macau, led by master Liu Sha. The concert will take place on May 31 at 8:00pm in the Grand Auditorium of the Macau Cultural Center.

Mísia is a pioneer of the new Fado movement that emerged in the 1990s. With a very personal, contemporary style and an almost transgressive attitude towards what was the most conservative tradition of Fado, Mísia created her own path and reinvented this universe in 1991.

The Fado singer has 13 released albums and celebrated the 25thanniversary of her career with the album Do Primeiro Fado ao Último Tangoin 2017, a retrospective of the best and greatest hits, which resulted in a new worldwide tour and a series of commemorative events. She was honored with the Amália Rodrigues Award in 2012.

Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, José Saramago has written for her voice, and French director Patrice Leconte shot one of her video clips (Duas Luas, 2001). John Turturro chose her for his film Passione(2010) and William Christie choreographed her in Cité de la Musiquein Paris (2004).

For years she has consolidated her international career, singing on the most prestigious international stages, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Avignon Festival, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (Lisbon), Chatelet Theater (Paris), Town Hall (New York), Le Carré Amsterdam , Cocoon Theater (Tokyo)

Mísia was born in the city of Porto and is the third generation of artists in her family, on the maternal side. Her mother was a Spanish classical ballet dancer, and her grandmother a 'music hall' and 'burlesque' artist, both from Barcelona. The fadista lived in Porto until adolescence, during which time she sometimes sang as an amateur in Fado houses.

At the age of 20 she settled in Barcelona and after a career in song, dance, 'music hall' and television, in 1991 she returned to Portugal and Lisbon to build a repertoire of her own within the universe of Fado. Mísia spent her youth listening to Fado and "finding her voice" in Lisbon's Fado houses.

"There is no school of Fado, Fado must be sung from our own experience," he said in an interview with the British newspaper Independent.

Pedro Moutinho, the youngest of a big trio

"There is no reason to sing Fado if there is no one to listen to it," Pedro Moutinho, who also became a Fado singer singing in Lisbon's Fado houses, once said. Pedro Moutinho, the younger brother in a trio of great Fado voices – Camané being the eldest, and Helder the middle brother – already has several critically acclaimed albums, and an Amália Rodrigues Prize in 2008.

After Primeiro Fado (2003),Encontro (2006), Um Copo de Sol (2009) and Lisboa Mora Aqui (2010), the Fado singer recorded a compilation disc, a sort of rearrangement of Fados under a new theme, O Fado em Nós, in 2016. He sang and recorded unexpected and unpublished duets with Mayra Andrade in classic "Alfama", and Tiago Bettencourt, in his work “Vou-te levando em segredo”.

The Fado singer, born in Oeiras, on November 11, 1976, shares his brothers’  passion for Fado, which he has been singing since the age of eleven. Pedro Moutinho, Helder Moutinho and Camané grew up in a family rooted in traditional Portuguese music. Their great-grandfather sang in her childhood, passing her talent to the next generation. In 2007 Moutinho was invited by Spanish director Carlos Saura to join the cast of fadistas in the documentary Fados.

The concert programme includes titles such as “Fado Adivinha”, “Fogo Preso”, “Lágrima”, “Tive um Coração, Perdi-o”, “Garras dos Sentidos”, “Ao Deus Dará”, “Veio a Saudade”, “Alfama”, amongst others.
