There are not many dance performances in the world that can be described with words like “thunderous” and “magnificent”, but Riverdance is certainly one of them.
An innovative and exciting blend of dance and music that draws on Irish traditions, Riverdance has staged over 18,000 performances in more than 117 countries and regions, winning over an audience of 36 million.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary on April 30 this year, Riverdance – The 20th Anniversary World Tour, will go on stage at the Venetian Theatre between January 24 and February 5.
Lauren Smyth is one of the lead performers of Riverdance, and has been with the show for more than 7 years.
Seeing Riverdance for the first time on the television when she was just 8, Lauren was deeply impressed and fascinated by the performance, and was determined to join the dancers on the stage.
Being one of the lead performers in the show, however, does not mean Lauren can afford to be complacent.
"Dancers around the world all strive to acquire different techniques and skills in order to be successful in competitions. In fact, some dancers even incorporate ice-skating techniques into their dancing. Since many dancers will join the audition of Riverdance, we have to work extra hard to keep up the pace," said Lauren at a special media preview event last week.
In this 20th anniversary edition, an assortment of fresh elements have been added to the show, including new costumes, lighting and projections, as well as a female musical band.
Moreover, Lauren specially points out the new song “Anna Livia", which she says will demonstrate the energy and beauty of women.
The lead performer believes that every member of the audience will be inspired by it and be able to take something away. This is especially true when it comes to the music of the show, which Lauren thinks will tug on the audience’s heartstrings and make them feel very uplifted.
Tickets for the show are on sale now at all Cotai Ticketing box offices.
