Irresistable Temptations

by

Just before Christmas last year, one of the city’ most popular restaurants, Temptations at StarWorld Hotel, reopened, unveiling it’s all new, elegant design and ambience, together with an upgraded a la carte menu.  Located within the restaurant, the famous Whisky Bar also received a rejuvenated look, offering guests an even more memorable experience of Macau nightlife.

The refurbishment of both Temptations and Whisky Bar aims to further reinforce StarWorld Hotel’s ‘Asian Heart’ service philosophy, and ensure that both facilities continue to be among the top choices for dining and evening hotspots in town.

The new look Temptations features a striking European garden theme interior design, complete with innovative vine lighting installations in the centre of the room and cozy birdcage-shaped surrounds for select dining tables.  The theme continues with exquisite flower-patterned tableware and birdcage-shaped decorations on the dessert plates.  The overall effect is one of subtle elegance and intimacy, a garden oasis in which to enjoy superb Continental cuisine, courtesy of Executive Chef Joe Chan.

Chef Joe has over 30 years of culinary experience in Continental cuisine and is one of very few Chinese Executive Chefs working in Macau.  Interestingly, he is particularly recognized for his mastery of Portuguese cuisine.  Last year, CNN Travel listed his Portuguese Seafood Rice as one of its Top Ten ‘must try’ dishes for visitors to Macau.

“I have worked in many hotels with a focus on French, Italian, and German food. When you work in hotels you have to have an international approach”, notes Chef Joe. “But I am also very lucky, because I was born in Macau, and I have lots of friends and family who are Portuguese and Macanese, so I have learned about their culture and grown up eating Portuguese food.

“If you want to cook this type of food you have to understand the culture behind it. Of course you need to know the methods and ingredients – everything is very traditional, even down to the type of olive oil that you use. And with Portuguese cooking, you really need to cook with your heart,” he explains.

Chef Joe has been Executive Chef at StarWorld Hotel since it opened nearly eight years ago, and the decision to give Temptations a new look was a chance for him to express his culinary talent even more.

“Previously we did have an a la carte menu, but because the buffet offering was so popular, many people did not choose from the menu.  I wanted to take this opportunity to let visitors know more about Portuguese food,” he says.

“We are not specifically a Portuguese restaurant, we are not French or Italian, but we try to offer very special signature dishes from those cuisines, with very good quality and a modern presentation.  We have French, Italian and German, but Portuguese is the priority”.

Offering the freshest, hand-picked ingredients and excellent value for money have always been a focus for all of StarWorld Hotel’s food and beverage facilities, and that philosophy continues with the new faces of Temptations and Whisky Bar.  Chef Joe believes that the changes are significant and are certain to impress.

“I really feel that the new restaurant concept for Temptations is totally different from before.  I am very happy with it and very excited about giving customers something that is truly from my heart”.

As for his favourite dishes, it is clearly a difficult choice.

“You have to try my Portuguese Seafood Rice, my Mediterranean Fish Soup, and my German Duck” he enthuses. “And you must try my soft Tiramisu.  There is no real secret, the ingredients are all the traditional ones, but they are all kept cold in the fridge, and only mixed together immediately when the dish is ordered. I’ve been preparing my Tiramisu like this for 18 years and it is always a hit.”

And when the sun sets and the city’s neon lights start to shine, there is no better place to relax and enjoy a drink than the all-new Whisky Bar, awarded ‘Best Whisky Bar in Hong Kong and  Macau’.  The revamped venue offers more luxurious space to meet with friends and colleagues, and impressive floor to ceiling glass windows presenting a tremendous panorama of Macau’s stunning skyline.

Guests can enjoy premium liquor, including the rare 1946 Macallan Vintage Single Malt Whisky, and innovative personalized cocktails by the bar’s renowned mixologist Kenneth D. Abaricia, winner of the ‘All World Open Cup 2013 – Cocktail Creative Classic & Bartending Flair @Hofex’.   There is also an extensive collection of premium cigars – more than 50 cigar styles from Cuba and Dominica. Live band gigs and live performances by the hotel’s resident DJ and dancers, enjoyed at the bar or even outside on one of the city’s few outdoor terraces, all add to the excitement and indulgence of the new Whisky Bar at StarWorld Hotel.

From February to March Temptations will feature a sumptuous shellfish promotion menu with mouthwatering delights of the sea including French Blue Mussels, Abalone & Grapefruit Salad; Poached Sliver Cod with Morel Mousse, N.Z. Mussels in Sake; and Grilled Ibérico Pork, Tiger Prawn, Clams, Seafood Sauce, and much more.
