Gown it up

Walking down the aisle in a stunning wedding gown is a dream for many women. A well-designed wedding dress not only serves as a foil to the bride, it is also a highlight itself at the wedding that helps attract people’s attention to the newly weds.

Following the shift of fashion trends, wedding gowns are no longer limited to pure white and ivory colours or some specific cuts. However, the renowned Hong Kong designer Brenda Lo from Miracles Bridal Couture, who recently brought her latest designs to the 8th Inspired Wedding Fair at Sofitel Macau, believes that it is best for wedding gowns to remain simple.

“A wedding gown is a long-term item. Unlike casual wear that is replaced easily, a wedding gown is something we will revisit in the future when we go back to the wedding pictures. Therefore, we will choose styles that last for a longer term,” she says.

Since most wedding gowns are still white or ivory, gown designers have to employ different decorations and materials to underline the dress.

“Wedding gowns are pretty white sometimes. To emphasize the style, designers utilize different beadings and materials such as lace. In fact, the major trend for wedding gown seems to be lace patterns with some beading.

“In the past, customers may have wanted their dresses to be shiny and flamboyant. But the trend now is to remain minimalist and elegant. Customers either pick a slim cut or A-line style that is soft and has some volume, with bulky styles rarely chosen nowadays,” the designer explains.

While there are brides nowadays who choose purple or even pink as the colour of their wedding dress, Brenda still believes that white or ivory colours remain the mainstream.

“Although I notice that there are wedding gowns that adopt different colours, most customers still favour white or ivory. It may be that the “dream gown” in their heart is usually pure white. But there are of course wedding dresses in champagne colour as well. However, the trend is still to pick the white or whitish colours,” she says.

Being a gown designer, Brenda believes that she has to be even more creative than her counterparts designing other types of clothing.

“I think a wedding is such a dreamy event that only happens once in your life, which makes it such a paramount matter. As a result, designers have to be dreamy as well and put themselves in the brides’ shoes to contemplate what kind of wedding they want in accordance with the demand of the customers,” she says.

Apart from the wedding gown, the bride’s accessories are usually another highlight. But instead of precious gemstones, Brenda actually recommends pearls.

“I am inclined to choose a pearl necklace because it is more elegant. I also believe that you don’t want people to focus on your accessories when you are wearing the wedding gown. I think it is already enough to have a small amount of accessories to embellish and I believe that the gown is more beautiful than any accessories.”
