Feminine Bold
SHUSHU/TONG is a Shanghai based brand focusing on feminine styles with a twist. Established by Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang in 2015, SHUSHU/TONG focuses on modern women who dare to express themselves by wearing unabashedly feminine details with a relaxed and cool attitude. The design duo, who both graduated from Womenswear MA at London College of Fashion, describe their aesthetic as “bold and feminine”. These two “Generation Z” designers create collections that are special yet accessible, expressing young and fun without sacrificing femininity. One half of the partnership, Yutong Jiang, visited Macau for the Sands Macao Fashion Week and spoke exclusively to CLOSER.
Can you tell us a little about the inspiration for your most recent collections?
The SHUSHU/TONG woman becomes more womanly in the 2018 Spring/Summer season. It is inspired by the erotic film Les Fruits de la Passion jointly shot in France and Japan in the 1980s, which created such a sumptuous sensual world and explored the adversarial relations between obedience and resistance. SHUSHU/TONG’s 2018 Spring/Summer collection therefore explores and expands the brand’s image with a new audacity, while the product range is also advanced further by new tailoring techniques.
As a Chinese designer, have you seen interest in Chinese fashion growing on the international stage over the past few years?
Chinese fashion is indeed growing at an amazing speed, with more and more international media and shops starting to keep an eye on it.
Trends in fashion seem to be changing particularly quickly. How difficult is it as a designer to stay ahead of the trends and successfully determine what is likely to be popular, or is that not really something you consider too much?
I don’t determine to stay ahead of a trend. Every season there’s a theme of the collection, and every design will start from this. For independent designers, the most important thing is to keep up the creativity, and keep your own character at the same time.
Has social media impacted your business and the way approach your design work?
Social media has really helped me develop my business. Some shops will contact us by Instagram, and posting a picture on social media will definitely help the product sell.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your career so far? What do think has been your greatest success?
How to run a company, there’s so much to learn. The greatest success has been creating collections that everyone can remember.
What are your impressions of what you have seen at Macau Fashion Week?
Macau fashion week was very elegant, magnificent, and very special to me.
