The new season of sexy cabaret TABOO presents hot talent and steamy performances

Sensuous women in sexy corsets and muscular men in tight leather wander provocatively around the guests, playfully approaching them with a naughty glint in their eyes and occasionally offering a wicked flick of a short whip.  This suggestively promiscuous scene is what welcomes audiences at the all new incarnation of TABOO, the exciting cabaret show by Franco Dragone at Club Cubic at City of Dreams, warming the audience up for what’s to come next.

And what that is, is a fantastically entertaining and very daring show full of a variety of highly talented performers and artists, enticing guests into a forbidden world of flirtation and sensuality.

TABOO debuted in 2012 and has been a huge success, evolving over time and attracting new and exciting artists and acts along the way.

It has also inspired other performers. Asian diva Miriam Yeung’s latest hit single Taboo takes its name and inspiration from the show.

Two of the star acts in the current edition of TABOO recently spoke with CLOSER about their roles in the sexy cabaret: lead singer Trenyce from the US, and Ukrainian dancing pair Artem Panasyuk and Anastasia Krutikova.

Trenyce came to fame in the second season of hit TV show American Idol, making it into the final top 5.  She also appeared with Jim Carrey in the movie Kick-Ass 2.  Her powerful vocals and exotic beauty are a mesmerizing part of the TABOO experience.

Meanwhile, Artem and Anastasia perform a breathtaking ‘hand-to-hand’ act, translating lover’s sweet entanglement into sensual balancing acts and stunning acrobatics that are truly breathtaking.

How did you come to be involved in the show?

I was performing on London's West End when my agent called and told me about an opportunity to work with Franco Dragone, one of the greatest show makers in the world. I went for the audition with no doubt as I knew I would have a chance to perform at City of Dreams, and also because I'd been a huge fan of Dragone for quite a while.

What sort of preparations did you need to do to begin performing in a show like this one?

I needed to learn the songs and choreography, shed the persona from my last show, which I did for three years and also culturally prepare myself. I didn't want to offend anyone so I researched what the target audiences were like. I do enjoy the process!

How is it different from other types of performances you have done?

TABOO has a lot of flexibility and I can experiment more vocally and stylistically compared to my previous shows. Also I had to get used to the Chinese audiences as well. These audiences challenge me daily as I know they are having a good time but they are just not as explicit as the audiences I'm used to.

What do you enjoy most about performing in a show like TABOO?

I enjoy connecting with the audience the most! I am used to only singing and delivering lines on stage and not being able to have a direct connection with the audience.  At TABOO, being able to directly associate with the audience, flirt, smile, be playful, and interact with them, makes me adore every show, as I can feel every one responds differently at different moments in the show.

What is the most challenging or demanding aspect?

The most challenging aspect for me is to make sure we keep the audience interested in every show. I am very concerned about audience emotion and sensations, so I demand a lot from myself in this respect. As an artist, the most important thing is to get people involved in the show and know that they are having a good time…it's my job to make sure they are enjoying themselves.

You have a wonderful voice and presence.  Which of the songs that you perform do you enjoy the most and why?

Thank you so much! Each night the songs affect me differently, but I always enjoy singing I Have Nothing [by Whitney Houston]. It's a signature song of mine and it allows me to showcase my ability to really sing. My favorite part is looking down and seeing the audience singing along!

Artem & Anastasia

What sort of background and training do you both have?

Artem – Anastasia started in circus school when she was a kid because her mother saw she was very flexible.  She started practicing circus acts from 7 years old.

Anastasia – Artem was a street dancer and started in circus school at the age of 21.  He was doing “hand to hand” with other partners, until we met each other in the circus school.

How long have you been performing this act together?

We started to work as partners from 2010, and first performed our act as special guests in the final of Ukraine's Got Talent.  The whole audience gave us a standing ovation so we decided to continue.

It seems incredibly challenging.  What is the most difficult part about it?

Working as partners, trust and connection are very important. We work together, eat together and live together 24 hours a day. It is not easy for other couples but we enjoy it a lot. We can read each other’s eyes without talking, and this helps a lot during the performance. In addition, our act is a combination of professional technique (different balancing tricks) and strong emotions together with the music.  It is not easy to focus on your skills and exchange emotions with a partner and the audience all at the same time.  Another great challenge for us is that we are dancing and performing every show in the dark on a tiny circular stage just 1.8 meters in diameter.  To perform such complex acts in a limited space is really tough.

How has your experience of working with TABOO been?

We always love to work in shows which are more cozy and intimate.  TABOO is just what we want, it’s like a warm family with different nationalities and we are happy that we can perform in a very close environment where we can fully observe and sense the audience.

How do you find the audience reaction to your performance?

The audiences here express themselves differently compared to in the West.  We can see from their eyes and expressions that they are enjoying the show a lot and are impressed by our acts because they are so close to us.  In a cabaret show like TABOO, audiences are also a part of the performances and make every show different and unique.
