In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region and the 30th edition of the Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has invited an unprecedented 12 extraordinary world-class pyrotechnic teams to present 12 spectacular fireworks displays themed as “Duo Celebrations for Macao” from early September until the first weekend of Golden Week.
Since its first edition in 1989, The Macao International Fireworks Display Contest has become one of the city’s major events and highlights, growing from just five teams in the inaugural year, to an impressive lineup of ten teams every year since.
Now, for the first time, instead of inviting ten teams to perform over five evenings, MGTO has arranged for twelve teams to dazzle on six separate nights, as the Contest celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The dates of the Contest will cover Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, and extend till the first Saturday of Golden Week, with teams from Malaysia, the Philippines, Portugal, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Romania, South Africa, Canada, France, China, Japan and Australia competing on September 7, 13, 21 and 28, and October 1 and 5.
The fireworks companies from Malaysia and Australia will make their debut in Macao, while the other ten teams have joined the Contest in Macao previously, with seven of them returning home with awards. All the contestants boast rich experience and extraordinary artistry in the creation of fireworks shows, and promise wondrous performances this year.
“We feel very proud and happy to participate in this year's Macao International Fireworks Display Contest,” comments a representative from Malaysia’s Blastmaster fireworks company, competing for the first time. “We hope to wow the audience in Macaoby introducing new pattern displays and combinations of patterns and effects.”
Also making their debut in Macao is Cardile International Fireworks from Australia.
“We are extremely honoured to be participating in this year’s Macao International Fireworks Display Contest. We are excited to represent Australia at this prestigious world event and we hope with our five generations of experience we can entertain the people of Macao with a spectacular and exciting production,” says Jimmy Cardile.
“Our pyromusical performance, entitled, “A Celebration of Animation”, will take the audience on a colourful, theatrical journey through some of the best known animated film and television theme songs and soundtracks. We hope to tell the story of some of these classic television theme songs and movie scores for our display,” Jimmy adds.
“Our display will feature millisecond-perfect pyromusical choreography, precision firing patterns, shapes and angles and detailed, unique and exclusive aerial shell designs, which will compliment and bring our musical score to life. We look forward to producing a display which appeals to people of all ages, taking them on an exciting, thrilling and captivating pyromuscial journey.”
Having made their debut in Macao for the 2013 Contest, Fireworks For Africa will return this year hoping to make a big impression.
“We are very excited to be returning to Macaoand it is an incredible honour to compete in this competition,” says Travis Yeatman of Fireworks For Africa. “We believe our unique design style sets us apart. We have young designers who bring a fresh element to fireworks designing and we like to try new ideas and use unusual colors, from the music through to the design and all the moments in between. Watch out for the finale though, it’s going to be huge!”
At last year’s contest, MGTO launched the official Songwriting Contest, and this year, to celebrate the 30thedition of the Contest, the twelve pyrotechnic teams will choreograph their 18-minute fireworks shows to the top-prize-winning song "Light your fire" as one of their background music scores.
Meanwhile, the top entry from last year’s Trophy Design Contest has been chosen as the design of the real trophies awarded to the winners of this year’s Contest.
The fireworks displays will be live broadcast on TDM – HD TV Channel with the synchronized music streaming from TDM – Radio Macao's Chinese Channel (FM100.7) at 9 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. every scheduled evening.

After enjoying each of the fireworks evenings, spectators can vote for their favorite fireworks teams online and enter a lucky draw for a chance to win attractive prizes.
As well as the six exciting nights of the Contest, MGTO is also organizing a host of other events to allow locals and visitors alike to enjoy the celebrations even more.
Besides the traditional Photo Contest and Student Drawing Contests that have been held in previous years, two new contests of video production and poster design will be launched this year. An online application system will allow for easy submission of entries for various outreach programs from September 7 to October 31.
MGTO is also supporting local community organizations and enterprises to organize community tourism activities that resonate with the Fireworks Contest, to enliven the city with stronger vibes during the event. The activities include a weekend program of DIY workshops for the 30thMacao International Fireworks Display Contest, scheduled at Anim'Arte NAM VAN on every evening of the Fireworks Contest, and the 4thMacau International Lantern Festival, to be held along Anim'Arte NAM VAN and the Waterfront Promenade of One Central Macau and Wynn Macau from September 7 to October 5. The activities will enable visitors and residents to soak up the cultural and artistic ambience in Macao while enjoying the dazzling fireworks.

The Carnival will be a confluence of culinary delights, performances, parent-and-kid workshops and games, offering a palette of more fantastic experiences. The top three entries in the Songwriting Contest last year will be presented on stage during the Fireworks Carnival.
Finally, MGTO will also organize a seminar about fireworks at Macao Contemporary Art Centre – Navy Yard No.2. A representative of the pyrotechnic consultancy assigned this year will be invited to talk about the process of fireworks production, on-site installations and safety concerns for the Contest, among other specialised information. Residents can learn more about the actual operations behind the event and gain a deeper understanding of fireworks and the Contest.
