All around the city, amazing examples of contemporary art are on display as part of the city’s mega art event, ‘Art Macao’. Wynn’s significant contribution to this event comes in the form of the impressive ‘Wynn – Garden of Earthly Delights’ Art Exhibition, featuring some truly stunning pieces from a number of the world’s most renowned artists. Inspired by Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch’s Renaissance masterpiece of the same name, the exhibition offers visitors a rich and immersive journey through a colorful world of innovative art pieces, including paintings, installations and cutting-edge digital art.
With art pieces on display at both Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace, the viewing experience is enhanced by the assistance of knowledgeable docents trained especially for the exhibition by the Macao Heritage Ambassadors Association, who will provide guided tours. Visitors can also learn more about the works and artists by scanning QR codes for a Digital Tour Guide offering detailed descriptions, videos, audio and even fun interactive selfies.
Upon entering the Art Gallery near the South Entrance of Wynn Palace, visitors are greeted by two mesmerizing pieces of digital art by Turkish artist, Refik Anadol. The installations, ‘Melting Memories’ and ‘Macau Currents: Data Paintings’, captivate the attention of onlookers as they redefine the possibilities that emerge from the intersection between technology and contemporary art.
More superb digital artwork can be experienced with Jennifer Steinkamp’s expansive ‘Silence Dogood’ stretching around three walls of the gallery, each about 16-metres long. This grand display of fanciful 3D animation interprets the formation of electricity in the thunderclouds, with countless colorful specks of ice dust floating and colliding with each other, lulling the audience into a sense of serene calm.
As visitors continue to explore the Wynn Palace Art Gallery, they will be captivated by the architectural fascination of Edoardo Tresoldi’s ‘Sacral’. Using an innovative blend of lighting and wire mesh, the Italian artist has created a visually illusive domed structure of archways and columns, inspired by classic forms of the Renaissance.
Other artworks at Wynn Palace include the sensuous, twisting forms of Herb Alpert’s ‘Spirit Totem Series’, and a selection of vibrant acrylic on canvas paintings by prolific American painter Sam Francis. And venturing outside the property for a ride on the SkyCabs, visitors will get a bird’s eye view of the giant footprints of a mythical dragon – ‘Dragon’s Footprint’ by MAD Architects.
Finally, Wynn has also invited a number of local artists including graffiti artist Pibg and oil painter Ms. Leong Wansi to create the ‘Love at Wynn: Outdoor Art Space’, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Handover of the Macao Special Administrative Region’s back to the People’s Republic of China. One highlight of this art space is a 20-meter long, large-scale stereoscopic illusion graffiti. Depicting colorful images of Macau’s past and present, the artists have chosen themes of ‘Human Paradise’ and ‘Leisure Garden’ to express their impressions about the developments and achievements of Macau over the past two decades, as well as their hopes and expectations for the future.
Also featured in the Outdoor Art Space is the large-scale, three-dimensional Chinese character ‘Love’ created by local designers, and inspired by Robert Indiana’s art piece ‘The American LOVE’, located in Wynn Macau. The interactive sculpture invites visitors to pay more attention to environmental protection and sustainability by encouraging them to insert recycled plastic straws into the art piece itself, thereby finding creative uses for what would otherwise be waste.
