What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Macau’s last nature spot, Coloane? Portuguese egg tarts, BBQ’s at Hac Sa beach, or maybe the city’s two adorable pandas? Well now there's another popular attraction in Coloane village with the family-run Ice On me bringing refreshing icy treats to enjoy on a hot summer’s day!
With their signature sugar-coated fruits and eye-catching store-front, this shaved ice shop has quickly attracted many local people to take a drive out to the village to chill their taste buds, while enjoying a stroll around the narrow streets and down by the riverside with their friends and family.
“The shop is operated by my family, including my younger brother, elder sister, my parents and me. We are huge lovers of iced desserts such as shaved ice, ice cream and popsicles,” one of the owners of the shop, Yoanna explains. “Whenever we travel to places like Japan and Taiwan, we always have shaved ice there, so we thought Macau should also have its own shaved ice shop.”
“Our permanent menus are sugar-coated haws, sugar-coated strawberries, strawberry shaved ice, matcha shaved ice and red beans, and haws shaved ice with plum wine, but sugar-coated strawberries are the most popular,” she says. “These recipes were developed by my mother and sampled by each of us. We opened this shop more than one year ago, but the shaved-ice menus were only created after we finished some renovation work in Chinese New Year.”
As for why they chose Coloane village for their shop’s location, Yoanna notes: “We think Coloane is a comfortable relaxation spot in Macau. Local people always spend weekends strolling around here and eating Portuguese egg tarts with friends, and we think eating shaved ice here on a summer’s day is a very pleasant activity too!
Yoanna’s family are also happy to bring a new offering to the attractions of the village.
“Some neighbors told my father that they are happy to see more people visiting this area,” Yoanna says. “Just like the name of our shop, we hope people coming to Coloane village can have their eyes on us alongside the Portuguese egg tarts!”
