Changing for the Better

by
Whether you’re looking for improved mental clarity, physical strength and flexibility, a healthier diet, more fulfilling relationships, better work life, or are just trying to self-actualize or find your role in the conservation of the planet, there is something for you in the field of wellness.  And Global Wellness Day (GWD), held every year on June 12, is designed to inspire and motivate us all to improve our lives in simple, achievable ways.

After having to cancel last year’s event due to the pandemic, Cintia Martins took Macau locals on a wholesome and fun journey in June, hosting this year’s Global Wellness Day activities at Macau Tower. Driven by her faith, passion for fitness, and love for people and the planet, Cintia has been Macau’s Global Wellness Day ambassador for four years now, annually expanding the event and convincing more people to join her on her mission, under the motto of “One day can change your whole life!”

“Due to COVID-19, most GWD events around the world had to be held on digital platforms this year, but fortunately, Macau was able to organize and hold a live event, making it one of the organization’s stand-out locations for 2021!” notes Cintia.

Her company, Mana Vida, together with MR.J Sports & Entertainment Events Planning worked side by side this year to build the event, inviting the whole community, of all ages and backgrounds, to join in a range of fun and educational activities, including group Zumba sessions and kombucha and farming workshops.

“With MR.J’s network, we were able to connect with more Chinese and local people,” she explains.

On the day, there was also the chance to try indoor archery and aerial hoops, as well as discussion sessions on mental health led by guest speakers.  A number of fitness and wellness companies also set up booths to present their products and services.  And local gyms and hotels were also represented, as wellness becomes a more popular aspect of their spa packages.

With a theme of “Be Well, Be EVEN Better”, three inspiring ladies shared their journeys of mental health, happiness and life, covering topics such as grief, health, relationships and life goals. Adriana dug into how to be more grateful and have a positive outlook in life despite the challenges. Hailey focused on how to maximize our health, deepen our relationships and how to get closer to living a life of true happiness. Lastly, Trinayani spoke about how we can lead our lives confidently, and how to push back against limiting beliefs that could be hindering us from achieving our goals and fulfilling our potential. All the talks shared practical step-by-step tips and processes that can be implemented to help improve our lives and overall wellness.

Wellness in its full form is still long away from being fully accepted by Macau, Cintia observes. “Most people in Macau don’t like being sweaty and uncomfortable.”

Naturally, living a life that is centered on honest reflections and improvement can cause some discomfort and takes a lot of time. Be that as it may, every year, events like Global Wellness Day demonstrate Macau’s growing curiosity and willingness to participate.

“It is a slow progression, but it is growing,” she expresses.

Whether it’s a more empathetic heart for the environment, our neighbours or even ourselves, more locals are becoming captivated and inspired to improve their lives. Better yet, the community of support is expanding locally, making it easier and more exciting to pursue wellness activities.

Given the promising attendance at this year’s GWD, Cintia is considering the possibility of extending the one-day event to an entire week next year. Nonetheless, she stresses that we don’t need to wait to embrace more wellness-centered tasks and lifestyles. The resources and communities are all around us. Wellness begins with us.
