Within the busy streets of Macau, it’s always refreshing to find hidden gems such as Chakra Space where you can get away from the crowded streets, “log out” from your daily routine and enjoy a few moments of tranquility.
Located on a quiet street near the back of A-ma Temple, Chakra Space stands out from the dull background with its interesting combination of bright colors and chosen artifacts. Just by looking at the entrance, you’re immediately hooked by the shop. A vintage-looking bike standing in front of a tiny window complete with a set of green potted plants – as young people say nowadays, it is definitely “instagram-worthy”.
However, Chakra Space is more than just its cute looks; it offers a variety of different healthy choices that you won’t find anywhere else and won’t regret trying.
“The shop’s name is Chakra Space, with ‘space’ meaning somewhere to relax. I hope the people who come here can relax and eat something different,” says Meng, co-owner of Chakra Space.
An odd but fun feature of the shop is that it doesn’t really have a specific menu. Meng explains that having a menu sometimes restricts people from trying out different dishes because they would mostly choose to go for dishes that are familiar to them. Therefore, his strategy is to change up the menu daily and serve his customers his chosen set ‘meals of the day’.
Adding to its healthy credentials, Chackra Space is actually a vegan café. Explaining why he decided to open a vegan shop, Meng notes: “In the beginning, I wanted being a vegan to be a trend. But now, I hope it can really be a new lifestyle instead.”
Chakra Space is Meng’s first cafe venture and initally he wasn’t all that confident that they could the survive the first several months, but they have now been open for a year and fortunately things seem to being going better than he expected.
“People think that a vegan café is a sort of novelty so some of them kept coming back.”
Whether its just for novelty or you genuinely want to eat some healthy food in the heart of the old city, Chakra Space is definitely a good option.
