Boracay

The remains of a paradise
by
A friend of mine always tells me the story of when he first went to Boracay “back in the day”, in the 1980’s. The island was then a hidden paradise in the Philippines, a sanctuary of wild nature, white sand and the most peaceful and crystalline ocean.

As with many other beach islands in Southeast Asia (Bali, Pukhet, Ko Samui etc.), Boracay has changed significantly over the past decades. Progress has brought more business, more tourists, and certainly more money to local communities, but also a lot more construction and vehicles.
Nevertheless, something still remains of that paradise we used to hear about.

Contemporary Boracay is mainly divided into three boat stations along the coast, and to put it simply: forget the rest, find a nice place to stay at Station 1 and enjoy the best Boracay has to offer. With a large footprint of sand, not that many people and a few good resorts, Station 1 is clearly the place to be on the island.

GETTING THERE

The best way to get from Macau to Boracay is with Cebu Pacific. The stopover in Manila is a bit long but the good thing is that you manage to do it all during the night and get to the island early in the morning.  After the trip to Caticlan Airport, jump on a tuk tuk to the pier (a 5-minute trip) and get a boat to the island. If you’re doing it with your friends or your partner, it’s great. If you’re traveling with kids, it can get a bit harder, because of the schedule. Fares are affordable.

WHERE TO STAY

Estacio Uno (estaciounoboracay.com) is a quiet resort by the beach, with a very decent bar/restaurant, a swimming pool and probably the best soundtrack of crashing waves on the beach. The staff are friendly and the prices are fair. Definitely one of the best choices.

WHERE TO EAT

There are a few popular international restaurants such as Cyma (Greek), Kasbah (North African) or Don Vito (Italian), but the best advice is to keep your eyes open and your nose alert, and search for the best seafood at the many lookalike local restaurants. Once you find it, you’ll be able to choose fresh prawns, squid and fish to grill right before your eyes.

WHAT TO DO

There is a wide range of water activities to try in Boracay. From boat trips to other spots on the island or just to see the sunset, to scuba diving and snorkeling, you can get it all. If you prefer, it’s also quite easy to rent a motorcycle and get around the island. Beach football and beach tennis are also popular.
