Venetian Day 1 slideshow-b

The Big 10

by

This month The Venetian Macao is celebrating its 10th Anniversary – Ten years since this impressive property began the transformation of the Cotai Strip and arguably Macau tourism and gaming future, and Macau CLOSER has been there all along the way covering many of the significant moments and major events.

To celebrate this anniversary, we have gone back through our archives to find some highlights from our coverage of the Venetian, and everyday for the next 10 days, we will republish some of these on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

We hope our readers enjoy revisiting some of these exciting moments in the life of The Venetian Macao.

DAY 1:

Our September 2007 cover illustration by Rui Rasquinho celebrated the grand opening of The Venetian Macao in colourful style.

Inside we spoke in-depth with one of the leading figures behind the development of The Venetian Macao, Mr William Weidner, President and Chief Operations Officer of Las Vegas Sands.

In the previous month's issue, we went along to watch players from the English Premier League Champions Manchester United Football Team give a coaching clinic to young fans, before playing against a team from Shenzhen.  The ManU players were some of the very first guests to stay at the brand new Venetian Macao, enjoying its suites and facilities even before the official grand opening.

DAY 2:

In our July 2008 issue we spoke to many of the creative people at Cirque do Soleil in anticipation of the opening of their first major show here in Macau, ZAIA, a multi-million dollar production, the likes of which Macau had never seen before.

In the same issue, our correspondent Ray Granlund went along to The Venetian Macao’s impressive new steakhouse Morton’s of Chicago, to interview the president of Morton’s Restaurant Group Edie Ames, on the occasion of the company’s 30th anniversary.

DAY 3:

On our August 2008 cover, we featured Mr Antoine Chahwan, General Manager of the luxurious new 360-room Four Season’s Hotel Macao. We spoke with him just prior to its opening – the next step in the expansion of The Venetian’s footprint in Cotai.  This, just a few weeks after the unveiling of The Shoppes at Four Seasons, 260,000 square feet of high end retail space.

The big events kept happening in September 2008, with The Venetian Macao playing host to the re-booted Miss Macau pageant, after a decade-long hiatus.  Our cover story went behind the scenes and introduced the ten beautiful local contestants vying for the new title.

DAY 4:

Our June 2009 cover story reported on the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), hosted at The Venetian Macao. The event brought all of Bollywood’s most glamorous superstars to the city for a huge evening of dance, music and celebration.  It also attracted hordes of fans to the property to attend the ‘Green Carpet’ event for a chance to see their favourite actors up close.

Jumping ahead to July 2011, and CLOSER attended another of The Venetian Macao’s major regular conventions, G2E Asia.  Macau’s gaming industry was continuing to boom beyond all expectations, and many of the sector’s most prominent figures gathered at The Venetian to congratulate Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO, Mr Sheldon Adelson, as he was awarded the G2E Asia Visionary Award.

Speaking of his first visit to Cotai, Mr Adelson reflected: “I looked at the swamp here and I saw Las Vegas”.
