The Macao Cultural Centre presents its annual “Open Box” series with three brand new local productions to be premiered in six performances at alternative venues in February. This new edition brings audiences closer to the action on stage with the mime production Muted, physical theatre Weaving Landscape and the multimedia puppet theatre, Xiao An.
Muted
(19-20 /02/2016)
Route Arts Association and director Nada Chan present the original mime Muted, to open this year’s “Open Box” series. In this new project, the company explores the culture and feelings of those who live in silence. Combining mime, physical theatre and sound effects, this ground-breaking piece offers the audience a chance to better understand and feel the heart of an unknown and fascinating world. This series of short stories depicts hilarious situations most of us never experienced, but that really do happen.
Weaving Landscape
(19-20 /02 /2016)
Exploring the notion that all objects in the world are made by intersections of dots and lines, the creative team of Stone Commune director and performer Jenny Mok and daring visual designer Nip Man Teng have developed Weaving Landscape, a touchable experiment focusing on the deconstruction of both the body and new textures using fundamental elements to form new objects.
Xiao An
(26-27 /02 /2016)
Rolling Puppet Alternative Theatre’s Xiao An, is an adaptation of a Chinese short story written by Yan Lianke, winner of Franz Kafka’s Prize in 2014. Using puppets and multimedia, director Teresa Lam and performers Kevin Chio and Sio Mei Kei create an imaginary space to display a combination of realistic theatre and puppetry, where questions are left open. Is theatre a place where illusions are created, or an open window for reality? Left alone when his grandfather passes away, Xiao An buys a TV to keep him company, only to find out that for some reason, everybody else in the village is on the news. When Xiao An decides that he too should be in the headlines, strange things begin to happen in the magical village.
