A Talent Showcase

by
Located in the prime location of SoHo, PMQ is a site for creative talents to showcase their designs, as well as a not-for-profit social enterprises that support Hong Kong’s creative industries.

The site was formerly the Police Married Quarters, which housed married junior police officers between 1951 and 2000. After years of vacancy, the historic site has been revitalised into PMQ and opened just this year.

Leased to young designers at a discounted rate, the old accommodation units have been turned into over 100 studios, workshops and outlets featuring lifestyle items, fashion and accessories, architecture, product designs, and furniture.

PMQ also has a 600 square metre function space known as the Qube for exhibitions and events. Shared office and lounge areas are also made available to designers for short-term occupancy. Creative events and seminars are hosted regularly, bringing in international designers to foster interaction and exchange. There are over 10 restaurants and cafés at PMQ varying from bakeries and cafes to fine dining.

With super quirky concepts and creations, the sheer number of unique studios in one space makes PMQ a creative shopper’s paradise. As Christmas approaches, Macau CLOSER honed in on just a few for some unique gift ideas.

POMCH Industrial Essentials

POMCH was established in 2011 by two designers, Jeffrey L. & Felix T., industrial and product design graduates from the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  Blending different concepts of industrial design and elements into fashion, they gradually created a new industrial style.  POMCH produces handbags, shoulder bags, wallets, card holders and accessories, each with a unique industrial concept and mood. Their most popular series to date – the VF Series – is a re-interpretation of vacuum forming technology, and form 3D pattern on soft PU / PVC, converted into simple handbag designs, making each bag unique. POMCH products are also available in different design stores in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia.

Bamboa

Bamboa started as a result of a fascination with bamboo and its potential to help alleviate deforestation and poverty in rural areas. Julia Washbourne launched the brand in 2008, which carries products made of locally harvested bamboo. Designs range from tableware and lifestyle products to flooring and bamboo fabric.
Bamboa’s mission is to provide beautiful products that help rural communities, support local artisans and encourage the use of a sustainable resource. The company’s mission statement sums up their approach. “As we head into a future of scarcer resources and limited energy, it is our goal and perhaps even calling to help rediscover bamboo’s beauty and qualities, and for it to replace materials such as hardwoods, stainless steel, plastics and concrete.”
