Sally Victoria Benson is a proud Australian by birth, but has always felt a connection to the home she spent her formative years in; the nostalgic Macau of the 1990’s. An entertainment industry professional for more than 12 years, Sally speaks both English and Mandarin fluently and has worked in many aspects of the industry around the world with a focus on acting, modeling, producing and hosting. After six years working in Beijing, Sally now currently splits her time between Sydney and Macau working on films, co-publishing for an online magazine Live Love Macau and working on projects with an eye to create more opportunities for local artists. A self-confessed movie addict, avid reader, traveller and animal rights supporter, Sally is often found exploring Macau’s streets with her dog, Pumpkin.
– What’s your idea of a perfect day?
My perfect day would be a mix of starting off with a gym session or a walk with my dog, followed by a healthy smoothie, reading scripts or books or on set filming. Meeting with friends for a coffee or to discuss interesting project ideas. Sushi for lunch followed by a wine after work. Finishing off the evening with an episode of my fav TV series or a movie.
– If you could go back in time to any event in history, what would it be?
I’m a history buff so I would love to visit so many iconic historical events. The Elizabethan times or during the First and Second World Wars. I would love to see with my own eyes what life was like during the years my grandparents lived through the war. They were incredible people and I wonder how the times shaped them as people.
– What’s your favorite book or movie?
I love so many types of films, but especially films based on true events, so I would have to say Veronica Guerin staring Cate Blanchett about the real life murder of an Irish journalist. My favourite book is A Fortunate Life by A.B Facey. It’s an Australian classic that reminds me to always be grateful for the life I’ve been given, to make the most of my opportunities and to try my best to be happy with what I have.
– And your favorite singer/band?
Britney, all the way and I’m not ashamed to say it!
– What can always cheer you up when you are having a bad day?
A good film, shopping, a nap, a chat with friends or family or a cuddle from my dog, Pumpkin.
– What’s your worst habit?
I get terrible food envy. When I eat out at restaurants I order my food and then I see someone else’s and I want theirs instead!
– If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Vegemite on toast with butter and a cup of tea, mmm so good.
– If you could retire tomorrow what would you do?
If money wasn’t an issue, I would travel the world and live in all my favourite cities for a year at a time, learn new languages and spend time with my family. Then I would produce and star in films I could be proud of.
– What’s your favourite place in Macau?
Sai Van Lake and the tiny streets behind it. It’s my favourite place to sit or walk around and remember the nostalgic Macau of the 90s that I hold so close to my heart. The Portuguese influence is still strong around there and reminds me of my wonderful childhood in this city.
