When it comes to sustainability, Macau is an interesting case. On the one hand, we produce more solid waste per resident than anywhere else in the world, much of that being food waste. In fact, the city's total volume of solid waste increased in 2021. On the other hand, emission free electric vehicles are cheaper here than most other countries, and through cutting edge technology, many of the large integrated resorts have managed to reduce their waste and energy and water consumption significantly in the past years. The government is also seeing great results from its efforts to encourage community recycling. Much more needs to be done of course, but it seems the city is at least on the right track. This issue we speak with a number of different people about their efforts to make Macau a greener, cleaner and more sustainable city.
