Maria Elisa da Rocha Vilaça was born in Porto, Portugal in 1955, and has lived in Macau since 1982.  She has a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Masters in History and a Doctoral degree in Museology.  She is Currently Director of the School of Arts and Crafts of the House of Portugal in Macau.  In this role, she has helped to develop and present projects that have been integrated into the different parades promoted by the Government of Macao, with an emphasis on the construction of giant puppets. She has also presented puppet shows in different schools in the city as well as performing different puppet shows both in Macau and abroad.  Artistically, she has training in the areas of jewelry, engraving, serigraphy, traditional Chinese ceramics and sculpture.

 
 
– What’s your idea of a perfect day?
The perfect day for me is the one in which I can share the time I have with impartial, honest, frank and friendly people.
 
– What’s your favorite book?
Um Rio chamado Tempo, uma Casa chamada Terra by Mia Couto.
 
– And your favorite singer/ band?
 The Beatles.
 
– Who is your hero? 
 My father.
 
– What can always cheer you up when you are having a bad day?
To be able to reflect and be aware that there will be many people having a worse day than mine. Positive thinking is fundamental.
 
– What’s your worst habit?
Being a perfectionist.
 
– If you could retire tomorrow what would you do?
I would set up an NGO anywhere in the world to develop projects with children in the pedagogical area.
 
– What’s your favourite season or festival?
The festivals of different puppet shows around the world.
 
– What’s your favourite place in Macau?
At the cultural level, the Arts Museum of Macao, and in terms of leisure space, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden.
