Joe Tang is a Macau-based writer. His works include Macau Literature Award Winner, Fortune Switcher, and Assassin, and his published novels include The Lost Sprit (Macao Novella Prize Winner), The Floating City and book of essays Words From Thoughts. His children’s drama Journey to the West, was invited to be performed at the Shanghai Expo 2011. 
 
 
– What’s your idea of a perfect day?
A good book and a nice cup of coffee. 
 
– If you could invite any four people (living or dead) to a dinner party, who would they be?
Ni Kuang, Haizhulouzhu, J. R. R. Tolkien and George R. R. Martin.
 
– What book(s) are you reading at the moment?
Why the West Rules for Now: The Patterns of History, and What They Reveal About the Future by Ian Morris.
 
– What is your favourite place to read?
The bench in my reading room.
 
– And what’s playing on your headphones?
The Beatles, Beyond.
 
– If your house was on fire and your family was safe, what would be the three first things you would save?
My Hard-disk box (with loads of digital photos, music and e-books inside), and my Clippings Folder (with all our family related clippings and souvenirs). 
 
– What virtue do you most admire in others?
Honesty and Modesty.
 
– If you could travel to any place on earth, where would you go?
The Bermuda Triangle.
 
 
Who do you think is the most interesting historical figure in Macau?
P. Bruno – a mysterious person who played a crucial role in the battle of 1622, when the Dutch were defeated by the Macau Portuguese. I put him in my novel Almas Transviadas although his existence has not yet been proven.
 
What is one word you would use to describe Macau?
Matryoshka.
