Firework Spectacular

by

The annual Macau International Fireworks Display Contest – universally acclaimed as one of the best of its kind – takes place on the Macau Tower Shorefront on  September 8, 13, 20 and 27, and October 1. Over the years, more than 100 international teams have participated in this world-class pyrotechnic shoot-out. Many visitors choose this time of year to come to Macau to enjoy an exotic holiday illuminated by spectacular displays in the night sky that can be enjoyed from many vantage points on the Macau Peninsula and Taipa Island.

The Macau International Fireworks Display Contest is an event organized by the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO). Director Senna Fernandes noted, “We are glad that the event has won ardent support from many well-known fireworks companies from across the globe in the past 25 years, making it one of the most stunning events of the year, which fascinates more than tens of thousands of citizens and visitors flocking into town for the fireworks show every year.”

The ten teams this year come from (according to the program order) Chinese Taiwan, China; Croatia; France; Korea; Poland; Portugal; Australia; Italy and Spain. Croatia and Poland are two new countries in the contest; similarly, the companies from Spain and Australia will stage their first performances in Macau.

This year, MGTO has again requested the teams to choreograph their firework displays to both music and laser light projections, to enhance the audience’s experience with more fascinating light and spectacular sound.

“In Macau, compared to other competitions, the firing place is quite far from the audience so we need to adapt the fireworks to the site. Also, we have two competitors every night for five weeks and we can use laser effects,” comments the French company, SODIP PYROTECHNIE, on the uniqueness of the competition.

The two teams from Croatia and Taiwan will open the contest, staging their firework displays on September 8, a night to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival.

Australian, Skylighter Fireworks, competing for the first time in Macau, has been in charge of the fireworks show on New Year’s Eve in Brisbane since 2009, and the Australia Day celebrations in the city for the last four years.

“We are very excited to be participating in the Macau International Fireworks Competition! It is our first international competition and we look forward to the challenge of competing against some of the world’s best pyrotechnic display companies. The standard of the competition is very high, so it will provide a great opportunity to compare our style and creative design against the best from the rest of the world,” the company commented on the upcoming event.

The other six teams have come to Macau for the contest before and some of them ranked among the top three. The Italian company La Tirrena has a long history since its founding in 1898 and has earned outstanding awards along the years.  They won second prize five years ago in the Macau contest.

From Portugal, PYROFEL has joined the competition twice and was once the champion. From China, Sunny Fireworks company has won third place in the past.

This year SODIP PYROTECHNIE from France has teamed up with the World Wildlife Fund promising to make a donation.

“We will give this organization the prize given by Macau Fireworks contest with a maximum of US$8000 if we are winners,” says the company.

Spectators can view live broadcasts of the firework shows with background music on TDM – Radio Macau’s Chinese Channel (FM 100.7) and TDM – Macau TV Channel every show evening.
