Korean Style

Macau’s economic boom has attracted a number of international brands, and the most recent to set up shop in Macau is the Korean franchise Tom N Toms. Established in 2001, it was the first Korean coffee brand to have its own roasting factory. Currently, it has outlets in the United States, China, Australia, Thailand and Singapore. With the slogan “Refresh your body and soul”, Tom N Tom’s aims to provide some unique services to differentiate itself from its competitors, including providing meeting rooms in some of its Korean branches. The first Tom N Toms shop in Macau is located near Tap Seac. Apart from offering different types of coffee, it has many bakery products and non-coffee beverages as well, and is planning to extend its food offerings for customers in the future.
Daily Grind

Situated far down the quiet back street of Estrada de Lai Chi Vun in Coloane Village near the old ship building yards, Hon Kee Coffee, is a legendary coffee spot in Macau. Hon Kee’s coffee style is a rather traditional local one that uses regular instant coffee powder sold in the supermarket. But what is so special about its coffee is the brewing process. Instead of simply adding hot water into the coffee powder and giving it a few casual stirs, the owner of Hon Kee, Mr Leong, first mixes the coffee powder with some sugar and a little bit of hot water and proceeds to grind it profusely before adding more water. Some say he can stir the coffee as many as 400 times in a minute and the result is a cup of coffee with an unusually smooth texture.
Made in Macau

Coffee consumption in Macau is certainly increasing but you may not know that Macau is also a coffee producer. While obviously coffee beans are not grown here, the locally-operated SIM coffee factory imports, roasts, grinds and packages coffee both for local sale and export to China. Established in 2008, the factory is located in the Zhuhai Macau cross border industrial zone works with a number of large international brands, helping them to produce and export their coffee products to China. SIM also has its own brand of coffee, Ola Cafe which is sells here in local supermarkets, and supplies coffee to a number of hotels and restaurants. The company has a joint venture agreement with IMO coffee, producing a variety of different flavoured coffee sachets for IMO espresso machines. And their latest product is a range of coffee bags for a convenient filtered coffee experience.
