If I was to count the amount of fellow authors who prefer to write in a coffee shop rather than at home, furniture shops would need to start worrying about their sales of desks, office chairs and so on.
Obviously, we’re still keen to buy those beautiful pieces of furniture – and CLOSER saw some amazing ones in Milan last month during the Milan Design Week (see page 46) – but when it comes to being productive or creative, there are few places as attractive as a coffee shop for writers.
Hemingway had his favorite coffee shops in Paris and other cities, as did Simone de Beauvoir, Henrik Ibsen, Franz Kafka, Fernando Pessoa and many others. And if years ago the charms of a coffee shop were far more attractive than the quality of coffee they had on offer, nowadays that’s not so true with more and more customers (writers and others) wanting the very best brewed beans in their cup.
In this special coffee issue, CLOSER shows you some of the best coffee shops in town and the faces behind them; offering an insight into the industry and its trends; and trying to understand why so many new small coffee businesses have been popping up in town recently. It’s a must-read for café and city lovers, for these coffee shops are excellent places for both locals and visitors to hang out and find out more about each other and about Macau.
In July we will reach Macau CLOSER’s 100th issue, an impressive number for this publication established eight years ago through the efforts and ideas of inspiring people I’m fortunate to still know today. It will of course, be a very special moment and we will take the opportunity to give the print magazine and our online platforms a renewed face, with a number of changes we hope all you readers out there will appreciate.
As part of the celebrations, we have launched an Instagram competiton (check www.instagram.com/macaucloser), and details of our 100th issue party in July, will be announced soon. Join us and keep being a significant part of this magazine. Stay CLOSER!
