We are certainly fortunate in Macau, that all throughout the year there is never a shortage of cultural and arts events. And in this area, October is always a very full month.
For music lovers, October brings the annual Macao International Music Festival, with its usual diverse array of impressive performances. This year, its 31st edition, is certainly no exception, and perhaps one of the most colourful shows is set to be the Soweto Gospel Choir, our cover story for this issue.
The choir’s performances are deeply inspired by love and compassion, and the individual experiences of its members. As musical ambassadors for their home country of South Africa, they bring with them a passion for diversity, spirituality, tolerance and humanity.
Looking to visual arts, we speak to renowned Dutch artist Maarten Baas, about his latest intriguing installation, ‘Count:Down Clock’ at City of Dreams, and we also check out the powerful images from the winners of this year’s World Press Photo Competition, on display at Casa Gardens.
Also visiting Macau is the highly creative Red Hong Yi, unveiling her latest innovative artwork, Bloom, at Mandarin Oriental, Macau.
We head over to Taipa Village to speak with Portuguese Chef António Coelho on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his award-winning restaurant, António’s. And we sample some very exclusive sake at Wynn Palace’s Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant, Mizumi.
In our Home Affairs pages, CLOSER drops by a beautiful apartment in Pak Vai Garden, renovated by and home to husband and wife team of local architect and design company MA+NU.
Earlier this month was the big Golden Week holiday period, and the city welcomed some 900,000 visitors. We sent our intrepid photographer Eduardo Martins out into the streets to capture some typical ‘tourist moments’.
And late last month, Macau had its Legislative Assembly elections, so our Q&A this issue is with the youngest legislator to ever be elected, Mr Sulu Sou.
