‘The 1st Macau Charity Darts Championship’ was held by Institute for Tourism (IFT) Year 4 Tourism Event Management students last month, successfully raising a total of MOP54,940 to be divided equally between two charities, the Cradle of Hope Association and Action Oasis. Additionally, MOP1,674 was raised at the after party for victims of the earthquake in Ya’an, Sichuan province which occurred just prior to the event. The championship was arranged on a group basis with teams of two players, at both entry and advanced levels. Overall, more than 90 participants competed for the top place. After the main event at i Darts Macau, the players and supporters moved to the after party at Mini Bar for more fun.
As well as raising money for charity, the event aimed to raise the profile of Darts as a serious sport in Macau. In the lead up to the event, the organisers held Darts workshops to help people understand the basics and improve their skills.
“I was so glad to have a chance to communicate with so many top players who are from different places, and I thank IFT for providing the chance to us,” said Dick Chan, one of the contestants.
The top three winners in the advanced level were Cheung Pui Hong, Wong Bong Kei and António Loi Correa Paes De Assumpção. The top four places in the entry level were Dark Horse, Da ge wei shen me, Fong Sin, and Monchichi.
The success of the event was the result of more than two months of efforts by IFT students as part of their final year of studies.
“This event let us put our knowledge into practice. I really appreciated everything we learned from the event before we graduate, like team spirit and passion,” said one of the student organisers Vivi Leong. “And the most important thing is that we raised money for charities.”
The students were pleased to have played a meaningful role and contributed to this sports charity event, and hope that a tradition of charity Darts competitions can continue in Macau in the future.
