Recognising the global concept that countries and peoples across the world all have their own unique ways of rejoicing and celebrating, World Music Day Macau aims to connect audiences with outdoor music, no matter where they come from or what their cultural backgrounds are.
Organised by IACM and Alliance Française de Macau, and scheduled for June 21, midsummer’s day, World Music Day is a set of free public events taking place around the city.
Music Express at Senado Square will recruit local talents to take the stage, while Music Fiesta at Largo de São Domingos will feature music from unplugged to classics. Eleven consecutive hours of outdoor performances from 11am to 10pm will offer the public a great time to enjoy exceptional live music.
Furthering the goal of public interaction, and truly bringing music out onto the streets, there will also be flash mob events from place to place that promise to be great fun for everyone.
If you’d like to get in on the act at Music Express, then register as an artist, band, or performer via the IACM website and try to find yourself a gig. It welcomes people of all ages as long as they have talent in any form of music.
You can even create some great musical moments to record at home and upload them to YouTube from June 8 to 21, to compete for big prizes. The five most viewed videos on YouTube will be rewarded.
World Music Day, also known as ‘Fête de la Musique’, began in France in 1982, inspired by a concept from some years earlier by American musician Joel Cohen who proposed an all-night music celebration to mark the beginning of the summer solstice. Today, World Music Day is celebrated around the world on June 21.
The day is celebrated to promote peace and spread goodwill through music. On this day, musicians perform for free throughout participating cities, helping to make all sorts of music accessible to the public and giving performers an opportunity to share a special bond with their audiences.
Now it has become a worldwide marvel with over 110 countries and 430 cities across the globe celebrating the day in their own way. So just turn up and join in the celebrations!
