Urban tales of ordinary life

by
This April, the Macao Cultural Centre will host the two-act play Departures, the final stage of the Cultural Exchange and Art in Residence project, Twin Cities. The project took local Macao talents to collaborate and rehearse a play with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre (SDAC), one of China’s most prestigious dramatic institutions.

Guided by the centre’s artistic team, the first story was penned by local scriptwriter Miki To. The short play will be staged by Shanghainese director Xu Zi Dong, leading four local strengthened thespians.

The second part features a story written by SDAC’s well-known playwright Zhao Lian, brought to life by local director Philip Chan and performed by two solid Shanghainese actors.

Exploring the ways cities may become imprints of our own existence, Departures invites us to look into two distinct urban experiences. With Macao as its background, the first piece tells how three sisters struggle to find new paths for their lives after their mother’s death. Their world is stirred and emotions run high as the sisters face problems with the law and mental health issues.

The story, set in Shanghai, invites the audience into the heart of a woman returning to her hometown, following a long absence of 18 years. As she stares into her old, dilapidated house, her mind is taken by memories of her childhood and youth, as the building keeps the emotional remains of a life filled with beauty and pain, joy and grief.
