Do you think your career and the way others treat you is determined by your appearance? If you had the chance, would you be willing to change your face to have a “better life”? What if you could get a brand new face, but one day you woke up and discovered that there were many other people who had the same face as you? This is how the story of Lette begins…
Lette is said to be the most ugly man around. His boss won’t allow him to go to his own product launch as he is too ugly, and even his wife considers his appearance to be “unacceptable”. However everything changes in an instant after he has plastic surgery. He becomes an overnight star at his company and is fawned over wherever he goes. Everything seems to be like a dream for him, but dreams can come to an end, and that’s what happens when Lette’s plastic surgeon starts to offer his face to anyone who can pay. Colleagues, customers and even his wife start to get confused with who the real Lette is. How will Lette view himself in this situation?
In a society in which everyone is obsessed with physical beauty, people begin to follow the “beauty standards” that society determines. In this drama, several characters are played by the same actor so the only way to distinguish between the “old” and the “new” Lette is by the reaction of the people around him, posing the question to the audience: “Who am I and who are you?”
The play was originally penned by the renowned German playwright and dramaturge Marius von Mayenburg, who once said, “I always try to write something that makes me uncomfortable.” In his plays the audience can always see the world in a familiar way, but also the dark and dejected side through the crevices.
