A Tribute to Ourselves and the Future

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the Macao International Music Festival will have a different format this year. Themed “For a Special Year”, the Festival will present various concerts and activities, including three major concert events, community concerts and  some activities.
 
In October, the Macao International Music Festival features a total of three ingenious concerts: “A Century of Chinese Music Macao Chinese Orchestra 2020-2021 Season Opening Concert”, “Mahler Symphony No. 1 Macao Orchestra and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra” and “Bravo Macao!”, using the power of music to inspire people during the impact of Covid-19. Tickets are now available at the Macau Ticket with early bird and various discounts.
 
In order to bring music to every corner of the city and to meet the needs for cultural diversity of residents, the Festival of this year features community music concerts of different themes, a street piano programme, master classes and other activities.

A Century of Chinese Music
Macao Chinese Orchestra 2020-2021 Season Opening Concert
 
 
The “Macao International Music Festival ─ For a special year”  presents A Century of Chinese Music, the opening concert for Macao Chinese Orchestra’s new season, in commemoration of the founding of the Datong Music Society in Shanghai 100 years ago. The Society has kicked off the development of modern Chinese music, laying an important foundation for the establishment of modern Chinese national orchestras and the cultivation of Chinese musical talents, as well as opening up a new musical chapter for Chinese music.  
 
Two acclaimed plucked-string virtuosos, “Queen of Pipa” Zhang Hongyan, and accomplished contemporary guzheng player Luo Jing, will perform the famous pipa piece Blossoms on a Moonlit River in Spring and the well-known zheng work Song of the Homebound Fishermen respectively. Come and enjoy an evening of melodious Chinese music and stunning performances.

Macao Orchestra and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will jointly present Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 to promote artistic exchanges in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In addition, Macao Orchestra will perform the first movement of Echoes from the Old Macao. This is a composition commissioned by Macao Orchestra and composed by local composer Lam Bun-Ching, a musical work for the reminiscence of the good old days of Macao.  
 
Also in this concert, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 will be performed by young violinist Huali Dang. Her performance was praised by renowned Chinese violinist Sheng Zhongguo as “interesting, with theory of music and personal emotion well integrated. Admirable.”

Bravo Macao!
 
 
Bravo Macao! offers local young rising music stars a platform to showcase their talents and artistic achievements so as to promote musical development of Macao. This time, percussionist Andrew Chan and saxophonist Lee Chi Pok will share the stage to showcase their virtuosity.
 
Andrew Chan has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree both in Percussion Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He is the winner of the Open Marimba Solo section in the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod, the first marimbist in Macao invited to perform for China Central Television and the official endorser for musical instrument brands in the Netherlands and the United States.  
 
Lee Chi Pok is the First Prize winner of both the Saxophone Advanced level and the Woodwind Concerto Advanced level in the 34th Macao Young Musicians Competition. He is currently studying at the Conservatoire Royal de Liège under Nele Tiebout and has gained numerous exchange and performance experiences from performing abroad.

Street Piano Programme
 
 
An unexpected music performance on a bustling street always gathers people’s attention. In addition to street performers, have you ever thought that the performance may also come from people around you? 
 
Two pianos will be touring around several spots of Macao from September to December so the public can play freely and bring music into every corner of the community, making it a distinctive musical feast in the city! 
 
The piano is ready, would you like to come and play it with your deft hands? All are welcome to take the spotlight at the designated locations. Be it classical music, pop music or improvisation, your performance will definitely add colour to the whole city.

Pipa Masterclass with Zhang Hongyan 
 
 
Zhang Hongyan is a renowned Pipa performer and educator, as well as a professor, doctoral supervisor and Director of Traditional Instruments Department at the Central Conservatory of Music. 
She is also the Director of Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection and Study Centre at Central Conservatory of Music, Distinguished Professor at the School of Arts of Peking University, an Honorary Fellow of the Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International Institute (UIC), and Director of the China Association for Vocational and Technical Education (CAVTE), as well as a visiting scholar at the University of Columbia in the USA. She devoted herself to academic study, teaching, performance and folk music promotion. 
 
Zhang Hongyan frequently performed at the world’s most prestigious concert halls, and has been called “A Beautiful and Unique Messenger and Music Fairy from the East”; many of her students have been awarded prizes in major music competitions, and have become outstanding teachers in universities and colleges across the country; her series of “playing whilst talking” lectures and “Zhang Hongyan non-commercial lectures on Music” have greatly contributed to the development of Chinese folk music.

A glimpse of the other activities of the Macao International Music Festival
 
 
Themed “For a Special Year”, this year’s Macao International Music Festival aims to relieve the public’s anxiety through music during the pandemic. Two community concerts were already successfully held in August, bringing music to the community and allowing the public to experience the diversity of culture and music. 
 
The concerts “Chinese Music Camp” on 22 August and the “Late-Summer Music Camp” on 29 August were successfully held at the Iao Hon Market Park and in the area next to Flower City Park respectively, bringing the beauty of music to the public’s everyday life, and drawing many spectators to enjoy the rhythm of music with the musicians.  
 
The Festival will continue to host a wide range of community activities in September, in order to enhance the public’s interest in music through the participation in these initiatives, as well as joy and satisfaction.  All residents are welcome to participate.
