The competition attracted a total of 1,327 submissions, including 415 photographic works and 912 paintings. After a rigorous judging process, 24 works in the two categories were chosen as winners. Among the winners were six Macao artists, a testament of the vibrant local art scene and its close integration into the GBA. Winning artists received an award certificate and cash prizes from RMB 25,000-100,000, totalling over RMB 1 million (approx. MOP 1.2 million).

Dr. Wilfred Wong, President of Sands China Ltd., said: “The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is a world-class city cluster with a thriving arts and cultural sector. The Culture and Tourism Development Plan for the GBA calls for the promotion of cultural and tourism exchanges, cooperation and coordinated development, with the goal of building an internationally influential area of culture and leisure.

Through ‘Time Is On My Side – 2021 Greater Bay Area Young Artists Scheme’, we would like to focus on Chinese cultural interaction and the exchange between young artists in the area, providing them with a high-profile platform. This is the first time that Sands China Ltd. has sponsored an art competition in the GBA that extends to the entire Mainland, contributing to the future development of a diverse art scene in the region.”

At the award ceremony, Dr. Wang Lan, Associate Professor at Faculty of Humanities and Arts at Macau University of Science and Technology said: “Macao enjoys a special status in China. Now, with the proposal of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Macao is embracing new opportunities for cultural development. As a local academic institution, we are excited to meet with art organisations, academic institutions and artists from Hong Kong, Macao and the Mainland through this scheme to discuss the development trends of art in the GBA and promote collaboration and exchange. We hope to showcase to the world the distinctive culture of the region, as well as its richness and inclusivity. The scheme aims to discover and encourage young artists in the GBA, who represent the future of Chinese art and whose creativity and expression deserve greater attention. It is gratifying that most winners were from the GBA, raising confidence about the outlook for the younger generation of artists in the region.”
