TURANDOT

Turandot, a beautiful Chinese princess, is looking for a prince to be her husband using three riddles. Only the one who answers the riddles correctly can marry her, whereas the ones who fail will die. Turandot was written by the brilliant Italian composer of opera, Giacomo Puccini and features popular arias such as the renowned aria Nessun Dorma. The tension and aesthetics of this masterpiece will be enhanced through the collaboration of Giancarlo del Monaco, the internationally famous Italian stage director, together with renowned set and costume designer William Orlandi, and music by the Macao Orchestra conducted by Lu Jia, and choruses by the National Chorus of Korea and the Macao Youth Choir.

BERLIN PHILHARMONIC STRING QUINTET

With a long history, Berliner Philharmoniker is regarded as a world-class symphonic orchestra. It differs from a conventional string quintet, featuring an extraordinary form: two violins, a viola, a cello and a double bass, hence comprising all the string instruments adopted by a common orchestra, adding dimensions to the symphonic expression of the ensemble. The Quintet is going to lead the audience on a journey from Classical (Mozart), through Romantic (Dvoák, Tchaikovsky and others) to modern music (Respighi and Piazzolla), allowing them to experience the refined courteous taste of the 18th century, feel the impassioned expressiveness of Romantic operas as well as the exoticism in the spiritual music of African Americans and the Argentinean tango.

THE CHINA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The China Philharmonic Orchestra will join hands with local young pianist Kuok-Wai Lio to present an elegant musical experience in mixed styles. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, will manifest the multiplicity and profundity of Mozart’s style with its impressive tragicality, ominous aggressiveness and dreadful violence. Bartók, whose opus magnums include Concerto for Orchestra, demonstrates a new facet of Western music in the 20th century with the sharp character of Hungarian folk music. While Qigang Chen’s symphonic prelude Instants d’un Opéra de Pékin, is an extraordinary fusion of the East and the West, through intertwinement between the aria music of Peking opera and Western symphonies.

VOICE FROM THE MONGOLIAN STEPPE

The rising and falling melody of Urtiin Duu (long song), the deep and powerful sound of Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), and the exquisite and magnificent singing of Khoomei (throat singing) are the three artistic treasures of Mongolian pastoral nomads. They perfectly outline the stark beauty of Mongolia’s expansive rural landscapes while manifesting its unique ethnic spirit. The superb Mongolian State Morin Khuur Ensemble will present the authentic Mongolian traditional music to the audience, escorting them to the vast and stunning Mongolian Plateau through their fascinating voices and tunes.

Carminho is Portugal’s brightest new fado star, considered to be one of the most talented and innovative singers of her generation. She is lauded for her potent but tender voice, which perfectly matches with Portuguese guitars. Her first album, Fado, was listed among the Ten Best Albums of 2011 by the prestigious British magazine Songlines. At the end of 2012, after more than 90 performances in Portugal and around the world, Carminho fulfilled an old dream: recording with Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque and Nana Caymmi, which led to a new edition of Alma. In 2013, Carminho was awarded the Portuguese Golden Globe for Best Solo Artist and the Carlos Paredes Prize. Her latest album, Canto (meaning “Singing”), confirms the future of a singer who is already one of the most internationally renowned artists in Portugal.

FROM RUSSIA, WITH CLASSICS

Prokofiev and Shostakovich are regarded as two of Russia’s compositional giants of the 20th century. These two composers, active in the same generation, have their own distinctive styles of music, with their symphony works ranked as classic repertoires of the 20th century. Under the baton of the talented conductor Valery Gergiev, the historic Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra has become an international preeminent orchestra, being the recognised interpreter of the works by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. In this year’s Festival, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will present special concerts to illuminate these two composers’ masterpieces, including Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 5 and the Romeo and Juliet ballet.

CHAPLIN ONCE MORE!

When sound films were sweeping the world, Charlie Chaplin responded to their arrival by composing scores for his films. City Lights marked the first time Chaplin composed the film score. The story tells about a tramp, starred by Chaplin, who falls in love with a beautiful, blind flower girl, and rescues a drunken millionaire. In The Gold Rush, the tramp has become a gold prospector and later is trapped in a snowstorm with a wanted criminal. Both movies are written and directed by Chaplin, including composing the soundtracks. City Lights and The Gold Rush will be screened in two cine-concerts respectively, accompanied live by the Macao Orchestra under the baton of Timothy Brock. As a prestigious figure in film scores, Brock was commissioned by Chaplin’s family to restore scores for twelve Chaplin films, bringing back the original scores of this comedy legend of silent movies in full.
