Late March through to early April is a great time for film buffs in the city, with the Macao International Film and Video Festival (MIFVF) set to present 13 outstanding movies from the Germany, Japan, France and Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Russia, Egypt and the USA, Argentina, Taiwan, Spain, Canada and Mexico. There will also be 26 local short features and documentaries screened over six evenings as part of the Macao Indies session, held in early May.

“MIFVF aims to cultivate and promote film culture in Macau by several means, with  international film screening sessions to encourage film appreciation and provide choices beyond the mainstream,” notes Rita Wong,  Manager for Programming & Marketing and Audio Visual Projects at the Macao Cultural Centre and Festival Curator.

The Macao Indies session of the Festival is designed to showcase the works of local filmmakers and award the best of the best of homegrown talent.  There will also be parallel activities to the Festival including workshops for screenwriting, film production and documentary production, talks to cultivate new-comers, exhibitions in the community and outreaches to schools.

“When MIFVF began in 2007, it was mainly focused on film screenings.  Now it has grown and evolved. Most importantly we wanted to develop the enthusiasm of our local filmmakers, and so in 2011 we started “Macao Indies” in May to close the festival,” Rita explains.

Another initiative is ‘LOCAL VIEW POWER’, a film commission project established in 2008 to nurture talented local filmmakers. Initially the program focused on documentary films, and it has now been expanded to include short features and animations.

“Throughout the production process, we have mentors from the industry to assist filmmakers in terms of storytelling, editing, and post-production.  Over the years, we have produced more than 50 documentaries for Macau,” the Festival curator points out.

These Macau stories not only appear on the big screen, but are also shown in secondary schools, made available for TV broadcasts, and entered into overseas festivals.

“We have screened over 100 local films at Macao Indies and have brought the documentaries to almost 20 secondary schools, and 7,000 students and teachers,” Rita notes with pride.

The pace of the Festival really heats up with RUSH 48, where budding local film makers are challenged to produce a short film in just two days.  The resulting productions are then screened for the public and assessed by a panel of judges who determine the best works.

“This is the most exciting event, a film shooting competition for all, challenging people to create a topic, shoot a short film and finish post-production, all in just 48 hours.  This event has become a great tradition of MIFVF,” says Rita.
