Hailed by Dance Magazine as “the most ambitious project in the ballet world”, this glamorous piece is staged by the master choreographer John Neumeier, a long-time admirer and leading expert on the Russian dancer.
Mixing art and life on stage, Nijinsky is a moving tribute in two acts, evoking the artistic circle and some of the greatest roles of a prodigy who was once nicknamed “the God of Dance”. Interpreted to the sound of an eclectic pallet of composers, from the Romantic energy of Chopin and Schumann to the exoticism of Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich’s enigmatic tones, this powerful production focuses on the pivotal moment when Nijinsky began to sink into the madness that would eventually lead to his demise.
Having conquered its place amongst the finest dance schools in the world, the Hamburg Ballet has built an extensive repertoire under Neumeier’s direction, who took the post as the company’s artistic director back in 1973. The master chorographer has since been praised to have set a new standard, both technically and expressively, having achieved unparalleled fame and popularity over decades of prolific work.
