With his new exhibition, ‘At the point of time’, recently opened at Creative Macau at the Macau Cultural Centre, local artist Lai Sio Kit has broken away from his usual creative practices. Compared to his previous pieces, his current artwork no longer just concentrates on using two dimensional structures to reach the eyes of the audience.
This time, Lai has adopted the Semi-stereoscopic method to represent his work. Due to some constraints such as limited space, it is difficult to display a large piece of artwork. Therefore, he divided the creative process roughly into two stages: namely painting and on-site creation. First, he drew ‘old style’ ceramic tile patterns on every small pieces of canvas with the main colors of cyan, dark green and white. Also, some of the lines are clearly visible which the artist illustrates the actual traces of time. On the other hand, some of the patterns are blurred which represents the vague memories in our mind.
Then he used the finished pieces of canvas to make a collage, turning it into a large piece of artwork. Finally, by hanging one-side of the creation in the air at the provided space, this reflects the distinctive skill of semi-stereoscopic.
Despite the fact that it is the same piece of artwork, it can be presented in a totally different way and area when the artwork makes connections with the space. The artwork can be recreated and reverted according to the offered conditions and space. In addition, it can bring a fresh feeling and provide new perspectives to the audience.
The diversified perspective offers many imaginary spaces for the audience. “It not only brings out any deliberate and specific messages, but presents time itself and the traces left behind when time goes by.”explains Lai. As a result, the audience can have their own interpretations.
Lai believes that everyone has their personal understanding of his artwork through their own experiences in life, which will give deeper meanings to the creation.
