The Power of Ritual

by
Luna Cheong presents her latest exhibition of painting and installation works Rituality at Creative Macau, reflecting on life rituals and their power

Local artist Luna Cheong is presenting her latest exhibition “Rituality”, a collection of 18 paintings and installation works at Creative Macau.

“This exhibition is a new challenge for me,” admits Luna. “The style of the works is something I started to create when I entered university, but I often used to feel that this style was not formal enough, too immature. After graduating and having held three solo exhibitions, I re-examined my own portfolio, as well as my style, and what I wanted to create in the end, and then decided to abandon my inferiority complex and start creating in this style.”

The works that make up the exhibition examine the various rituals in our lives and the kind of power they grant us.

“If life is a ritual for the existence of the soul, what ideological activity comes from it?” questions Luna Cheong, adding that she hopes to “reflect with everyone on the meaning behind traditional rituals in life and the power that private rituals bring to people, both in their intrinsic and formal sense”.

The artist further enquires:  “When the original meaning of the ritual gradually disappears, what form does the meaning takes as the ritual continues?”

Luna explores and answers all these questions through themes related to life and ritual itself. For the artist, the “life” part focuses on exploring group activities during specific events. The “ritual” part focuses on exploring personal rituals in one’s life triggered by personal desires.

The exhibition also includes larger scale installations.

“I like creating installations because they provide an immersive experience, allowing the viewer to experience the journey of the mind that the work brings,” she notes.

Born in 1995, Luna graduated from Macao Polytechnic Institute of Visual Arts in 2018 and spent half a year at National Taiwan University of the Arts as an exchange student. Her works mainly explore themes such as the emotions of social relationships and conceptual ideas derived from the interaction between the audience and artworks. She likes to express herself through a wide range of artistic avenues, such as drawings, sculptures, videos or installations.

Since 20015, she has participated in several joint exhibitions in Macau and Taiwan. She has also presented two solo exhibitions, The Valley of Tears and Life Out of Focus in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Some of her artworks were featured at the AFA Autumn Salon in 2017 and the 1st International Biennale of Women Artists in 2018.
