Ours fields, our dreams

by

“Dreams” and “reality” can seem like two contradicting ideas in today’s Macau. While many have chosen to comply with reality in the hope that they will be able to fulfill their dreams one day, some may have lost their way in the process.

The play “Field of Dreams”, produced by local theatre group Brotherhood Art Theatre (ARTE), is about the dream-chasing journey of a local footballer played by Michael Vong Tin Ian, and the people around him. It will be on the stage of Sands Theatre between November 6 and 8.

Michael says that the play is not created based on any real story, but has taken ideas from the experiences of the young local player Leong Ka Hang, who was twice awarded the Macau Footballer of the Year.

Nevertheless, the leading actor stresses that this play is not only about football.

“The theme of this play is, of course, football, and [the storyline] focuses on the life of a football player. But what we want to explore is the story of the current generation of Macau.

“People talk about dreams and dream-chasing a lot nowadays. We hope that the audience will get the idea of ‘dream big’ after seeing our play… However, ‘dream big’ does not mean that we are going to sacrifice all we have. If you want to chase your dream, you should know how to balance it with the cost.

“Our whole story is about how a player left behind things and people who are important to him in the process of achieving success”, he says.

Given that “Field of Dreams” is a football story, one cannot help but wonder whether the actors are really going to play on the stage. And the short answer is: yes.

“We are going to play football on the stage. But we are going to modify those scenes in an artistic manner. In this play, we have integrate elements like dancing, mime and stage effects, which is similar to the Kasou Taishou in Japan.”

“What we want to show our fantasy and imagination so that the audience will be in awe of our performance”, he adds.

Michael believes “Field of Dreams” is among Macau’s first, if not the first, theatre pieces with a sports theme. He thinks the technique of expression will be a highlight of the show.

Moreover, Michael is confident audiences will be able to relate to the play even if they are not football players.

“This story is closely associated with Macau. We are trying to tell what is happening in Macau. All the characters and background settings are inspired by the daily life of Macau residents.”

He explains that the play is about the drastic changes in society and how people are trying and struggling to cope with those changes, with some of them caught between the way of life they truly love and the expectations from society and the people around them.

“I think issues like this allow the audience to relate to the play. I believe that people already feel the struggle and the unpleasantness. We are going to help them voice it”, he says.

For Michael and ARTE, “Field of Dreams” is a huge investment, both financially and emotionally, given that this year is the fifth anniversary of the group.

In the future, Michael reveals that ARTE will produce more plays that are related to social issues in Macau. In fact, they are planning a play about land reclamation next.

“I think that plays should resonate with the audience. However, we are not going to pander to them. In contrast, we want them to contemplate on their lives after seeing our play. This is what we want to achieve.”
